This time, we decided to shoot a combined set featuring Marisa Kirisame cosplay and Patchouli Knowledge cosplay from Touhou Project, centering the theme around their everyday interactions in the library.
In terms of styling prep, Marisa's iconic blonde braided pigtails were quite tricky to achieve; I used multiple wig bases to braid them into the right thickness and fluffy volume. The black-and-white Vintage Lolita vest dress layered over tiers of lace, along with that wide-brimmed hat edged in black lace, required substantial effort to secure properly. Patchouli's look was even more intricate: once that oversized pink ribbon bonnet was on, I had to stay constantly mindful of its center of gravity to prevent it from tilting. Her pink-and-white multi-tiered ruffled gown flows gracefully, though it is quite heavy, making me worry about stepping on the hem while moving. Paired with thin-framed glasses, her demeanor closely captures that bookish, library-dwelling essence from the original Touhou Project.
During the shoot, we prepared various props to enhance storytelling: a three-arm brass candelabra with candles, a heavy tome with an antique cover, a small black lantern, and a black lace parasol. We lit real candles on site as our primary light source; the flame worked wonders in crafting a warm-toned atmosphere with just the right contrast. When blonde Marisa held the candelabra or leaned against the railing reading, the candlelight cast natural rim lighting along the side of her face. And as purple-haired Patchouli ascended the stairs clutching the thick volume, the warm glow clearly revealed the intricate lace textures of her dress.
The location was set in an interior featuring vintage wooden stairs and black-and-white checkerboard flooring, an elegant European classic aesthetic that perfectly met our vision. When Patchouli sat on the armchair with its purple cushion, her pink ruffled skirts spread across the floor, pairing with white platform sandals to look lazy and effortless. The large window revealing lush greenery outside brought a touch of vibrant natural light into the dimmer interior, nicely balancing the overall color temperature.
The shooting process was quite physically demanding, as specific camera angles required climbing up and down. For instance, the high-angle perspective looking down at the two of us on the stairs required setting up a ladder to achieve that deep, expansive perspective, while constantly ensuring our wide-brimmed hats didn't shadow our faces. Meanwhile, though real candles look gorgeous on camera, they were easily blown out by drafts caused by walking around; often, just as the frame was set and we were ready to click the shutter, the flame would flicker out, forcing us to pause and relight them.
Patchouli's pink multi-layered lace dress and pink-and-white bonnet, combined with Marisa's monochrome Vintage Lolita dress, form a complementary color harmony. To faithfully portray the contrasting personalities in Touhou Project, I deliberately fine-tuned their interactions. For example, in the solo shot of blonde Marisa holding the black lace parasol with one hand, paired with a White thigh-highs outfit, her subtly tsundere and bold aura shone through. In contrast, purple-haired Patchouli leaned quietly against the railing or sat in the chair, gently turning pages with her fingertips to embody her scholarly poise and composure.
The final selected photos successfully capture the ambiance we envisioned. The visual depth of the vintage staircase paired with candlelit accents gives the scenes a fantastical charm while retaining a cozy slice-of-life intimacy. Although the heavy costumes and wigs were exhausting, the resulting satisfaction was deeply rewarding—especially seeing how light and shadow brought out the rich textures of the lace trims and ruffled skirts, making every bit of effort worthwhile.
