This time, I shot a set of Dark Sweet Style Little Devil Cosplay photos. A lot of thought went into everything from the hair and makeup to the lighting, so I wanted to share some details and reflections from the shoot.
First, regarding the costume, I chose a black sleeveless dress. The openwork lace design at the neckline adds a touch of vintage sweetness, keeping the pure black tone from looking too dull. For the lower half, I paired it with sheer black tights, which is one of the visual highlights of this black tights outfit. The texture of the tights gives off a subtle sheen under the studio lights. Together with the red straps on the thighs, it creates a classic black-and-red color scheme that elongates the legs while adding a playful and sexy element. The thick-soled black leather shoes balance the proportions, making the standing posture more stable and adding an anime-style weight.
As for accessories, the red plush devil horns on top are the soul of the look, and the medium-sized black feather wings don't overwhelm my frame but rather enrich the silhouette from the side and back. The red trident in my hand is a prop, and I specifically chose a style with white ribbons; when walking or jumping, the ribbons flutter, adding dynamic energy. The hairstyle features double braids with bangs, which frames the face nicely and echoes the overall sweet and cute style without looking too sharp.
During the shoot, we experimented with various angles and poses. Sitting poses are the easiest to look good; sitting on a white cylindrical prop, resting my chin on my hand or holding my face with both hands while smiling at the camera feels natural and perfectly showcases the dress and tights combo. The high-angle shot was my attempt at a different perspective—standing on the cylinder and shooting from above. It enlarges the face and shrinks the body, creating a strong manga-like, cute effect. For the standing poses, I tried putting one hand on my hip and lifting the pitchfork, matching it with a slightly tsundere expression to show the mischievous side of the little devil. My favorite is the final jumping snapshot, with one leg bent back, the pitchfork held across my body, and a fully unleashed smile, which breaks the stiffness often found in studio shoots.
For lighting, we used a large area of soft light without harsh contrasts between light and shadow, aiming to highlight the texture of the skin and clothing for a clean, transparent look. The benefit of a solid gray background is that it makes the red-and-black subject pop out completely, making the colors more vivid. Actually, the biggest challenge in this kind of cosplay photography is expression control. Because the styling is quite exaggerated, a too-serious expression would look overly edgy, while too sweet wouldn't have enough deviousness, so you have to find a balance between cute and a little bit wicked.
The entire shoot took about two hours and involved multiple pose changes. Although it was a bit exhausting, seeing the final photos made it all worth it. The little devil theme is always a popular choice for a Halloween outfit, but I think it's also great for everyday shoots or festive events. The key is the black-and-red color scheme combined with the wings and horns, which instantly builds the atmosphere. If anyone wants to try a similar style, I recommend choosing textured fabrics over thin cotton, which can easily look cheap. Also, double braids are a huge plus for the hairstyle, bringing out much more energy than letting your hair down. This shoot gave me more insights into the Dark Sweet Style look, and next time I might try adding sparks or smoke effects to make it look even cooler.
