[Vikutorika cosplay] GOSICK: Gothic Lolita Detective Log, the Precipitation of Retro Gothic Style

Turning the pages of a book in front of the lens and adjusting the multi-layered lace cuffs is probably the most ceremonial action when shooting a Gothic Lolita character. For the work GOSICK and the character Vikutorika, I always approach them with a desire to carefully restore them. Every shoot is an experience of calming the mind, which is why even after trying to get close to this character again after so long, I can still feel that quiet aura exclusive to her.

The core of this styling lies in the restraint of the overall colors. The large areas of black form a classic visual contrast with the white lace, which is the most deeply memorable feature of this character's visual impression. The black ruffled bonnet on the head underwent stiff pleating, which, when paired with the black ribbons hanging down on both sides, frames the face shape and overall silhouette beautifully. The broad white lace ruffles at the neckline are a focus; we needed to ensure the lace texture was flat without chaotic creases, while the black slender ribbon bow was also adjusted multiple times to tie into the most symmetrical shape so that the visual center wouldn't look loose.

Although the golden circular pendant worn on the chest isn't too large, it serves as a highly ingenious bright spot of embellishment under the black-and-white clothing base tone. It not only restores the character's classic accessory but also gives the front chest area a certain visual focus, making the overall styling look more complete and exquisite. The white multi-layered lace cuffs are very broad, naturally stacking into a highly retro silhouette when holding a book or letting them drop, which is a big plus for this dress styling in terms of movement.

In terms of makeup, it mainly emphasized a fair and translucent skin tone. Because the character's pupil color is very special, I paired it with light-colored contact lenses this time, coordinating with lighter brow makeup and slightly soft eyeshadow to make the gaze look more ethereal and deep. For the wig, I selected straight light blonde hair with a certain sense of air, which, combined with the straight bangs and sideburns on both sides, tucked perfectly beneath the bonnet brim without looking rigid. The entire makeup face needed to stay matte, striving to present a delicate texture akin to a porcelain doll under the retro lighting and base makeup.

The layout of this set of photos also had thought put into it. We specially set up a background with a rich gothic color palette; the dark red wallpaper on the walls and the golden trim carry a sense of the precipitation of time. The candle holders in the background and those white fluffy substances resembling melted wax or falling snow jointly create a mysterious and enclosed gothic atmosphere. I sat on that retro deep green leather single sofa during the shoot; the leather texture and stiff chair back formed a material clash with the soft skirt hem and lace, perfectly fitting this character's story background.

During the shooting process, the sitting posture actually required constant adjustment. With this kind of heavily layered dress, sitting down easily compresses the petticoat out of shape or makes the neckline shift out of position, so we spent quite a bit of time readjusting the clothing's silhouette in the intervals between every hand lift or book page adjustment. Holding a relatively heavy hardcover book in hand, I needed to control the angle of the book pages when opening it and maintaining my gaze, preventing the book's shadow from casting overly harsh shadows on my face so that the facial light could stay soft.

Ultimately being able to present this kind of feeling is inseparable from the cooperation of every staff member on-site. Dressing up as this character again after many years, my mindset is completely different. Previously, I might have been attracted by the character's appearance, but interpreting her now, I want more to capture that sense of narrative that comes naturally in her quiet state. Natural expressions are often closer to this character's traits than forced posing; it's enough to simply display that atmosphere of being immersed in the book in this cosplay portrait.
