After receiving this custom-made Wishadel Mai Xiaowen cosplay costume, I carefully checked many details. The red-and-black cropped jacket is the visual center of the whole piece; to recreate that crisp look, I separately secured the shoulder straps and trailing ribbons at the back. The fabric of the jacket has a slight sheen under lighting, forming a sharp visual contrast with the white star motif. The inner black leather cropped top with white drawstrings, paired with metal zippers at the waist and reflective shorts, immediately maxes out the techwear feel and tactical combat vibe upon putting it on. The chunky Martin boots not only add height but also give a solid grounding, making them perfect for running around different locations to scout angles. For props, I prepared a long-barrel rifle, a short dagger, and a small sphere with laser light, all of which served as fantastic interactive elements during the shoot. To match the face mask and red colored contacts, the eye makeup was intentionally deepened with red tones to make the gaze look sharper and more aggressive.
I also put a lot of thought into wearing and adjusting the outfit. Because there is a substantial amount of negative space between the shorts and boots, it relies on leg poses to anchor the visual weight of the frame, so I kept stretching between shots to keep my leg muscles toned. The white drawstring hanging from the neck and the waist straps easily got tangled, requiring readjustment every time I switched poses, but for the final photos, this meticulous maintenance was well worth it.
The location for this shoot was set on industrial-style outdoor staircases and semi-open architectural areas. During the day, we tested various sitting and reclining postures on the stairs. To fit the crisp style of this costume, I purposefully adjusted body angles, such as crossing my legs on the steps to highlight leg lines while making the overall composition fuller. Cradling the gun in my arms or resting it casually to the side naturally brought out that cold detachment. Because the combination of shorts and chunky boots relies heavily on clean movement, I consciously tightened my core when adjusting sitting poses, keeping my upper body upright so the frame wouldn't appear sluggish.
By nighttime, the shooting atmosphere shifted noticeably. We used red light sources on the footbridge to assist the lighting; the nocturnal environment paired with red shadows made the red elements of the outfit pop vividly while deepening the black sections. To capture the dynamic tension of action, I attempted single-knee kneeling while gripping the dagger, as well as standing blade-swinging motions. Since the outdoor steps were uneven, I constantly adjusted my center of gravity to keep the chunky boots from hindering fluidity. The photographer also provided plenty of compositional suggestions, leveraging the linear patterns of the stairs for different perspectives, such as high-angle shots looking down at me lying on the staircase, creating a strong sense of visual pressure that echoed the combat attributes of this outfit.
The entire shoot was deeply fulfilling. Spanning from day to night, the varying light and backdrops lent this cosplay set two completely different textures: sharp, vivid tactical style by day, and a mysterious, chilled demeanor by night. In terms of pose design, I aimed to keep body language decisive and crisp, whether aiming down sights or handling the dagger, striving to convey the character's capable presence. Shooting this set gave me fresh insights into movement expression and emotional delivery, building valuable experience in utilizing costume construction to enrich compositional layers.
