Atop this industrial ruin filled with steel and red vignettes, I held that glowing heavy sword which was almost as tall as I am. Some people might think this kind of wide shot composition with a grand architectural background is a bit outdated, but I simply prefer the tension of this large-scale format. Standing beneath this massive steel gantry crane and looking up at the interlaced beams, the overwhelming sense of pressure immediately maximized the immersion of fighting as the character. Honestly, while it captures a fleeting moment of coolness, wearing the gear from start to finish was truly not an easy task. The white coat gets dirty easily, and I had to avoid making movements too large to keep from tearing those leather straps around the waist.

For the costume, a crisp combination of red and white was chosen, accented by black-and-gold belt buckles and boots, which created a strong color contrast against the heavy red-and-black industrial environment. For this styling, the wig also took a long time to comb—long white hair paired with a few strands of red at the tips provided just the right amount of color block conflict. The most noteworthy element was still this great sword; although it had quite a lot of weight in hand, to ensure the balance of the frame, it had to be held steadily with one or both hands. Especially for the pose in Picture 2 where I am standing on one leg while holding the sword, in order to stabilize my core and maintain an elegant posture, my ankle was actually exerting force covertly, and it took several takes to capture the most natural moment.

The low-angle upward shot in Picture 3 is absolutely my favorite. That oppressive feeling of the barrel pointing straight at the lens was entirely thanks to the creative genius of the photographer, Qianhe. He practically lay half-flat on the ground to capture my most relaxed yet vigilant instant. At that moment, the light hit my face in a chiaroscuro manner, making it feel as if I were truly stationed on a battlefield. I always tell my friends that the most fascinating thing about capturing cosplayers is improvisation. If the movements are completely standardized and formulaic, it loses the fun of interaction. The randomness brought by improvisation often captures unexpected, vivid expressions and body language.

Just like the character concept I set up, people, after all, always have a dual nature. The decisiveness and killing intent on the battlefield do not conflict with the carefreeness of sitting at a roadside stall blanching goose intestines and beef tripe in private. When I shot her, on one hand, I wanted to present that explosively cool aura on the battlefield with slightly tensed muscles and a steadfast gaze; on the other hand, I tried my best to keep the coat loosely draped and not fitted too tightly, wanting to reveal that casual freedom of "I could destroy the world, but right now I just want to have a bite of spicy hotpot." This sense of contrast is the essence of the character, and it is also a reflection of myself in real life.

Thankful for this shoot, we chose a late-night industrial park completely devoid of passersby. The environment provided not only a framework but also an atmosphere for this industrial style photography piece. The red ambient lights hitting the cold steel skeletons, paired with a few spark particles rendered in post-processing, gave the resulting photos a stronger cinematic quality. Shooting on location always comes with unpredictable troubles, such as sudden strong winds or defense-defying insects. But the moment the final photos came out, all the discomfort and late-night fatigue vanished into thin air.

Perhaps wide shot composition isn't as trend-catering as people online say, but aesthetics are inherently subjective. Persisting in recording characters in the way you love and experiencing the lives of different personas is the most primitive meaning of playing Cosplay. Unfettered by rules and frames, presenting things exactly the way you want—even if the background is just a massive steel factory building, it can still capture a heart-stirring sense of story through this cosplay photoshoot.
