Pre-production for this Genshin Impact Vodyanitsa cos photoshoot took over a month. The most challenging parts of the costume were the metallic hardware over the chest and the deep-blue skirt drape around the waist. The metal pieces had to be individually 3D-modeled and painted, while the skirt's gradient dye effect was revised three times before reaching the ideal look. To ensure an elegant, flowing drape, the base fabric was constructed by layering thick satin beneath sheer organza, so that every step moves with the dimensional layers of deep ocean currents. Managing the wig was another massive endeavor—if not styled carefully, long teal-green wigs can easily look flat at the crown. I pre-curled the roots with a curling iron to give them natural lift, and anchored the floral ornaments on both sides directly onto the strands using thin monofilament fishing line so they wouldn't slide off during dynamic movement.
For makeup, to complement the stained-glass cathedral windows in the scene, I specifically chose high-saturation bright-blue contact lenses, paired with an expansive wash of reddish-pink eyeshadow to emulate that subtle warm-cool contrast of faint light filtering through deep ocean waters. Set decoration was the centerpiece of this shoot. The Roman columns and Gothic stained-glass windows in the pure white hall were built as practical physical sets; we also laid a deep-black reflective board across the floor and arranged multiple tiers of blue-and-white floral arrangements nearby, staggering heights from hydrangeas to white roses. The watery surface reflection you see in the photos was achieved practically with this reflective board combined with minor post-processing touches.
In terms of posing choreography on shoot day, I intentionally explored stances that highlighted leg lines—such as sitting on the stone steps with one leg lifted, or reclining sideways amidst the floral blooms. This not only revealed the high-slit cut of the skirt, but also accentuated the delicate wrap-around straps of the silver high-heeled sandals. Because the floor's reflective board easily caught stray reflections of nearby fill lights and crew members, the photographer had to reposition the gobos and flags with every single camera shift; sometimes, capturing a natural downcast gaze meant holding an awkward, taxing posture for several minutes. The flared bell sleeves on this dress are quite expansive and easily crease if not watched carefully, so I had to smooth out the sheer sleeve layers before every single take.
Reflecting on the shoot as a whole, I am thoroughly pleased with the layered chiaroscuro lighting. The cool deep-blue tones formed a striking contrast with the pure white surroundings, while the warm light pouring through the stained-glass windows struck a visually harmonious balance. The most fulfilling aspect of cosplaying is seeing a 2D design sheet turn into reality step by step—from selecting fabrics and accessories to finally manifesting the imagery of one's imagination before the camera lens, the journey of bringing an idea to life brings immense personal satisfaction.
