This set of Marisa Kirisame cosplay photos is one of the works I've wanted to share most recently.
Preparing for this look took quite a bit of effort on both the outfit and accessories. First is that exaggerated big white ruffled hat; not only did it need to be wide enough to highlight the character's iconic silhouette, but its interior also required reinforced support so it wouldn't collapse or tilt in outdoor wind. Styling the long, golden curly hair was equally time-consuming. To achieve fluffy, bouncy ringlets, I woke up three hours early on shoot day to curl and set it, using plenty of hairspray so it maintained a comic-like volume under the garden light. The main garment features a slim black-and-white pin-striped cut, decorated with multi-layered lace trim and bows at the collar and chest, along with semi-sheer black lace sleeve covers. Though relying on a classic black-and-white palette, the layered details keep the outfit from looking flat, perfectly matching this vintage dress aesthetic.
The lighting on the day of garden portrait photography was fantastic; we specifically found a small courtyard surrounded by lush greenery. Afternoon sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting soft, dappled light spots. I stood to one side, tilting my head slightly toward the camera—just like that playful "peeking out and staring" perspective mentioned in posts. To capture a fairy-tale feel, the photographer used a wide-aperture lens, blurring the pink roses in the foreground and green leaves in the background into a soft, beautiful bokeh. This posed a real test for focus tracking, as any shift in weight could easily blur the face. Fortunately, the focus locked precisely on my eyes, making the expression look exceptionally clear and natural.
As a classic character from Touhou Project, Marisa Kirisame can be interpreted in many ways. While most fans prefer spell card or combat poses, I specifically chose this edition incorporating Lolita fashion elements to present a unique, relaxed side of the magician—as if she temporarily set down her broom to rest in a small garden at the edge of the Magic Forest. Real-world flowers and greenery paired with an exquisite, gorgeous outfit create a magical sense of breaking the fourth wall. The shoot was very relaxed; I didn't need to force hardcore poses, but simply kept a natural gaze, letting emotions flow with the gentle breeze and floral shadows. Although the outfit felt somewhat heavy—especially the large hat straining my neck, and the layered petticoats catching on branches—these minor inconveniences were completely worth the texture achieved on camera.
Looking back at this photo, the overall atmosphere and lighting hit the exact sweet spot I hoped for. While doing 2D Cosplay, I often think that cosplaying isn't just about recreating a character, but about building a brief dream in real life for ourselves and everyone watching. I thoroughly enjoyed becoming this black and white magician in the garden, conveying a charming yet serene aura through the lens. I kept post-processing minimal, preserving the fresh natural light of the raw shots while slightly adjusting contrast to make the skin look clear and translucent.
