[Komeiji Koishi cosplay] Thorny Rose Garden: A Vintage Fantasy in Touhou Project

While conceptualizing this Thorny rose garden series beside the windowsill, I kept deliberating on how to subvert Komeiji Koishi's purely adorable facade. As a quintessential figure in Touhou Project, her lore carries an innate subconscious detachment—much like the prickled flora of a rose garden, alluring yet inherently elusive. To inhabit this mood, I devoted immense care to the wardrobe. The core palette centered on a black dress rich in tiered lace flounces and ruffled pleating, with a broad yellow ribbon bow resting boldly atop the oversized black brimmed hat. Blue blossoms pinned into the headwear and scattered across the attire echoed the aqua-blue wig while adding spirited accents to the palette. Because I have always cherished this intricately layered Lolita aesthetic, coordination was approached with deliberate intent; the cream-white puff-sleeve underlayer and spherical blue corsage accents at the bust were selected to heighten sculptural depth.

Brilliant sunshine blessed the day of the shoot, complementing the aged, rustic patina of the wooden cabin. I had the photographer position strobe lighting from outside the window, using the weathered mullions as a natural foreground frame to evoke the voyeuristic sensation of peering into a fairytale realm. Hand-drawn sketches taped across the glass, alongside vintage bicycle wheels and retro Coca-Cola signage in the background, enriched the frame with visual narrative. In terms of posing, I incorporated interactions with a vintage purple telephone receiver and glossy blue sphere props. Posing with the antique phone appears effortless, yet maintaining neck and shoulder posture required holding an engaged, upright spine throughout each take to flatter the clavicle lines. Concurrently, casting my gaze slightly off-camera channeled that signature state of being lost entirely within her own subconscious world.

For the lower half, I styled subtly textured Black stockings paired with black stiletto heels. The hosiery's textile grain was paramount in establishing smooth gradations between highlights and deep shadows. Seated upon the windowsill with one leg crossed, the natural fall of light across the legs was flattered by the Black stockings, injecting an air of poised elegance beneath the voluminous hem. To reinforce the Thorny rose garden motif, blue floral sprigs and purple satin ribbons were laced around my ankles and calves, ensuring every micro-detail held up under close scrutiny.

The shooting went exceptionally smoothly thanks to seamless chemistry with the photographer. We continuously shifted prop staging across the set, testing diverse seating angles and gazes. Channeling Koishi's closed Third Eye and softly tilted chin demanded repeated calibration of eye-lines and head angles. To keep hand gestures organic, we ran through numerous variations until capturing that quintessential state of uninhibited spontaneity. The finished series fully realized the vintage, enigmatic, and gently uncanny mood I envisioned. The cool natural exterior light and warm interior tones established a striking chromatic contrast, making the blue tresses and floral accents pop vividly.

The entire shoot felt like materializing a lucid dream: from garment patterning to on-set lighting orchestration, the deep focus poured into every step brought immense satisfaction. Translating a beloved character into reality through personal interpretation and bespoke styling is deeply gratifying. These photographs stand as a visual articulation of her inner world and an exciting venture into blending vintage romance with surreal fantasy. I am overjoyed to share the serene mysteries of this fairytale through the thorny expanse of this rose garden.
