[Patchouli Cosplay] Touhou Project's Purple Aura From the East, the Serene Moment Opening the Magic Book

This New Year's photo set is captured under the highly auspicious theme of 'purple aura from the east.' From the hair color to the skirt, the entire look implements a dreamy pink-and-purple gradient palette. For these convention photos, I prepared this Patchouli outfit long in advance.

For the wig, I chose a very soft taro purple, crafted to be fluffy and natural. Paired with blunt bangs, it recreates the character's laziness and intelligence from spending years reading ancient texts in the library. The head decorations use an abundance of lace, tulle, and small star embellishments, with a touch of a yellow crescent moon accessory to add depth, perfectly echoing the multi-layered Lolita outfit wind long dress.

The design feature that attracted me most about this dress is its sleeves—extremely wide lantern sleeves with countless layers of fly edges and lace trim. A simple hand lift or picking up a book easily creates a wonderful sense of airiness and elegance. The pink lining patchworked with the purple outer skirt yields a very soft color transition, looking as lightweight as cotton candy. On my feet, I paired white lace-trimmed ankle socks with a pink-and-white chunky-soled shoe style, which maintains the unity of the overall style without making my feet too tired from standing for a long time. Paired with a pair of small, round-framed metal glasses, it instantly maxes out the character's academic aura.

The shooting location was in the indoor venue of an exhibition. Although this venue is relatively large, its excellent transparency made the lighting appear quite soft. The shoot that day actually tested physical stamina; though this outfit looks beautiful, it is highly heavy, so the photographer @Kaikai was exceptionally patient. We cooperated to attempt several different poses, such as sitting on a plush mat on the floor, flipping open that magic book decorated with 3D flowers and stars to create a cozy feeling of reading in a garden or bookstore; or standing up and making a motion of gently adjusting the glasses with one hand to highlight the full posture and the drape of the clothes.

There were actually many onlookers and passersby on-site, and other photographers were setting up lights nearby. During the shoot, we frequently had to adjust angles to avoid photobombers entering the frame. However, this on-site atmosphere was instead very good; everyone turned their heads to take a look when seeing this attire, and that feeling of being recognized is highly satisfying for a coser. The handcrafted book prop was also attached bit by bit by myself; to accommodate the camera effect, every arrangement of flowers and starlight underwent a few adjustments until it looked sufficiently full and harmonious in the viewfinder.

The character Patchouli carries an extremely high level of recognizability in Touhou Project. Although there are various secondary fan-made styles derived from her, this time I gravitated more toward restoring that soft, delicate maidenly feel while retaining her iconic purple hue and reading temperament. This outfit, like a purple cloud, happens to echo the meaning of 'purple aura from the east' in the post text. Behind every final photo and every detail restoration lies very meticulous preparation. I hope this photo set can transmit a serene yet warm New Year power, letting everyone feel the unique character charm of Touhou Project.

These moments recorded in front of the lens inherently belong to the joy brought by cosplay. Whether it is the tulle texture of the skirt hem or the details of the headpiece, they all need to be perfectly presented in the photos. The convention's lighting and floor reflections were a bit hard to control, but the results of this set of convention photos gave me a massive surprise. It is precisely this kind of dedicated cosplay photography that makes me feel all the outfits and tossing around were completely worth it.
