Last year, I confidently chose a date during the cherry blossom season and specially prepared this magic-filled outfit, planning to leave a set of photos under the blossoming trees. However, when I reached the destination, I found that the cherry blossoms were either still in buds or had almost completely fallen, completely missing the peak bloom. Looking at the bare branches, I truly didn't know whether to laugh or cry, genuinely experiencing what it feels like to be a so-called "Sakura Refugee."
However, since the gear was all dressed up, I couldn't let this day's opportunity go to waste. I quickly adjusted the shooting plan and changed the venue from the crowded cherry blossom viewing spots to the adjacent forest park. Here, there are vast stretches of dense woods, wooden benches weathered by the sun and rain, trails covered with fallen leaves, as well as quaint wooden fences and torii architectures in the distance. Although the pink sea of flowers was gone, these natural, rustic elements unexpectedly matched my "ordinary magician" outfit, creating a sense of a secluded forest adventure.
There are actually quite a lot of costume details, especially that iconic pointed witch hat. The hat not only has wide white lace ruffles but is also decorated with a purple velvet bow on the side, carrying a very heavy texture and high recognizability. The golden long curly wig was carefully combed beforehand and braided into two loose braids, combined with large wave curls, which has both the dreaminess of a magical girl without looking too bloated. The inner white puff-sleeved shirt has a higher neckline, layered outside with a deep blue sleeveless corset vest adorned with small golden star buttons and star embroidery, forming a bright color contrast. The lower body features a rich white lace ruffled skirt hem, covered outside with a layer of a white apron with star and cross patterns, full of layering and design sense.
To match this vintage yet playful outfit, I specially paired it with white lace short socks and black thick-soled buckled Mary Jane leather shoes. When shooting in the outdoor Forest exterior, the mottled light and shadow is actually a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can indeed create a certain mysterious fairy-tale atmosphere, but on the other hand, if the light is too cluttered, it's very easy to form huge bright-and-dark contrasts on the character's face. Fortunately, the angle of the sunlight filtering through the treetops that day was quite good, and the photographer's capture of the light was also highly sharp. For instance, when leaning against the wooden fence or curling my legs on the bench, the light could softly illuminate my face, and the golden wig appeared bright and full under the intersection of tree shadows and sunlight.
During the shoot, I tried my best to attempt some actions that interacted with the surrounding environment, such as sitting on the bench naturally curling my legs to let the skirt hem form beautiful folds on the knees; or holding the tilted wooden fence with one hand while leaning forward slightly, an angle that just beautifully displays the tailoring of various parts of the clothing and the proportion of the combination of white lace short socks and shoes; or half-squatting in front of the bushes beside the trail, making playful gestures with both hands as if casting a spell. These seemingly casual movements, on one hand, were to match the setting of the magician identity, and on the other hand, also hoped to completely display the details of this outfit to the lens audience through different angles.
Although I didn't get to shoot the deeply longed-for cherry blossoms this time, leaving a minor regret, this creation in the forest also gave me an unexpected harvest. The natural light and rough wood texture gave the white lace and deep blue starry sky colors richer layer expressions. Walking in the woods as an ordinary magician is inherently a highly relaxing experience. The absence of the sea of flowers instead allowed me to focus my center of gravity on costume texture, light and shadow shaping, and lens expressiveness. I hope to hit the accurate blooming time of cherry blossoms next year to make up for the regret of this year's flop in Cosplay photography.
