[Castorice cosplay] Phantom of the Blue Butterfly in Honkai: Star Rail

Putting on this Castorice outfit today against a blue-and-purple drape backdrop, the overall result felt much closer to my internal expectations than early makeup trials and sample shots.

Starting with the costume structure, the primary hue chosen this time was a high-saturation yet low-brightness blue, combined with black-and-white color-blocked piping and a choker design, fitting the character's cool and quiet disposition nicely. To prevent the outfit from looking stiff, the skirt hem specially used a reflective fabric with pearlescent sheen, spliced internally with white irregular ruffles to produce three-dimensional layering under side-backlighting. The cut-out butterfly ornaments on the arms serve as a key visual focus of this look; translucent acrylic material paired with rhinestone accents creates a sparkling effect under light and shadow, giving great clarity even without post-processing.

The wig underwent delicate trimming. Because the character's original purple-toned hair is relatively light, it can easily overexpose under strong studio lights. Therefore, I adjusted the thickness and curvature of the bangs to ensure they naturally framed my face during filming, leaving wisps of hair along the cheeks to add lightness and flow. The choker around my neck was specially custom-made, featuring floral elements and a small blue butterfly pendant on a black ribbon base, gathering visual attention without leaving too much empty space on the neck.

Regarding the set, I layered numerous semi-transparent white and pale purple drapes, using beaded chains for vertical visual extension. This kind of set is extremely sensitive to lighting; if hit directly with harsh light, the texture of the drapes vanishes entirely into a flat sheet. So we used a two-light setup: the main light illuminated the face from the side-front, while a rim light with a snoot came from the side-back to add rim lighting along the hair edges, utilizing blue butterfly props as foreground elements to create natural depth.

Pose control during the shoot was also crucial. This outfit features a lower neckline; if shoulders are fully relaxed or hunched forward, the upper body can easily appear bulky. Therefore, holding shoulders slightly back with arms naturally raised allowed maximum display of collarbone and neck lines, while creating a harmony between butterfly decorations on arms and butterfly hairpieces on the head. I intentionally chose a slightly side-turned seated posture, tilting my head toward the camera with eyes slightly out of focus rather than staring directly at the lens, conveying the character's serene demeanor.

As photos straight out of a smartphone camera, the REDMI Turbo 4 Pro's color reproduction actually leans cool. This inherent cool tendency worked to the advantage of this blue-purple themed styling, achieving a cool atmosphere without heavily lowering color temperature. However, controlling overexposure in this setup was essential because white drapes easily wash out highlight details. Thus, reducing exposure compensation in real-time preserved drape textures, while slightly lifting shadows in post ensured black collar details didn't flatten into dead shadows.

Shooting cool-toned subjects tests emotional resonance most of all. Although costume and wig can achieve high restoration, only when expression and posture merge with the character can the Blue-purple dreamy style atmosphere blossom throughout the frame. To capture the right feel, I revisited character story beats before shooting, attempting to grasp that subtly sorrowful yet tranquil disposition. Today's overall photo results were quite satisfying—delivering expected quality both in atmospheric lighting and detailed styling textures. Preparing and adjusting on set took considerable effort, but being able to leave behind the true look of this character before the lens makes every bit of spent time feel completely worthwhile.
