The true value of shooting Penacony at Jing'an Joy City is something that can only be clearly explained when standing inside the viewfinder yourself, bringing neon lights into the composition. This time I cosplayed Sparkle, a character packed with immense personal charm in Honkai: Star Rail. I didn't choose a pure studio shoot, but instead grabbed my partner and headed straight to the boundary between the anime convention booth area and the mall's public space to get to work.
In terms of outfit preparation, this red-and-black scheme costume paired with semi-transparent tulle sleeves provides a very light fluttering feel when moving. The most iconic fox mask and black leather gloves serve as the props with the strongest interactive pull between Sparkle's look and the audience. In several shot setups, I intentionally pushed the mask up to the top of my head or held it in hand, precisely so my eyes could align focus through the lens, capturing that slightly cunning sense of Elation.
Regarding the approach to this kind of "mall street shoot" Cosplay photoshoot, it relies heavily on lighting and post-processing. The natural light filtering through Joy City's glass ceiling combined with the colorful shop signage in the venue is perfect for highlighting this bright-colored outfit infused with traditional elements. During post-processing color grading, I intentionally preserved the softness of the image; those blurred fish-shaped light shadows and orange-red light spots correspond perfectly to Penacony's psychedelic yet bustling atmosphere.
During shooting, the best interaction always comes from eye contact with the camera. I tried my best to recreate the character's mischievous feel, such as raising an index finger to my lips in a "shh" gesture, or partially covering my eyes with the mask. Because the costume structure chosen this time is relatively body-con, combined with black leg straps, the overall line silhouette was expressed exceptionally well in low-angle half-body shots and full-body turn-around shots.
Of course, shooting cosplay in a public area like Joy City means that besides dealing with constant passersby, one must also keep an eye on makeup and hair at all times. For this set, makeup focused heavily on the eyes and dewy lip color; the tear mole below the eye and the red flower mark on the shoulder were soulful details that brought the character to life in the photos.
Actually, cosplaying this character, the biggest motivation was wanting to express that "Elated" and unpredictable personality through still frames. If you look closely at these photos, you'll find that although the poses are static, whether it's the fluttering of wide sleeves or the slightly scrutinizing and curious expression on the face, everything tries as much as possible to fit the character's anime concept. I am constantly reflecting on how to make real-life cosplay photos not just "look like" the character, but also let viewers feel the character's soul—that's probably what we pursue shoot after shoot. I hope this Penacony special feature at Jing'an Joy City allows you to feel that bustling yet dreamy cosmic atmosphere.
