This shoot features the Spring Unrestrained outfit for Yu Linglong in NARAKA: BLADEPOINT. When I first decided on this character, I was completely drawn to that temperament which is both cool and serene, yet lively and a bit cunning. To achieve the ideal effect, we communicated many times about everything from makeup and styling to clothing details. The entire outfit utilizes a large amount of thin, light white tulle material, complemented by a few light purple and golden embellishments, plus the lace trim around the neck, chains at the waist, and purple ribbons wrapped around the arms, creating highly rich layers. The most special part is undoubtedly the long golden fingernail armor on my fingers. When I first put them on, I wasn't quite used to them; I felt as if I had turned into some kind of spiritual beast with an innate talent for agility, needing to be extra careful during movements, but the visual impact is genuinely powerful, making my entire hand lines look exceptionally slender and sharp.
For the day of the shoot, we selected an indoor studio with soft lighting, arranged in a New Chinese style carrying a touch of Eastern Zen. The photographer very thoughtfully utilized the circular translucent screen in the back as the primary light source, letting the strong light hit from behind to form an imagery of a full moon on the screen, which perfectly fits the character's fantasy Xianxia atmosphere. The floor was covered with straw-woven tatami mats, complemented by purple and blue oil-paper umbrellas placed to the side, along with faux pink flower branches and miniature rockeries. These props and furnishings gave the entire frame both an everyday life vibe and a sense of ancient style cosplay fantasy.
To showcase the beauty of this costume, we tried multiple different compositions and postures. For the close-up half-body shots, I would intentionally bring the long golden fingernail armor near my lips with slightly downcast eyes, striving to present that allure carrying a touch of distance. When it came to full-body shots, I stretched my body to the max to break up that static elegance. For instance, raising hands in a kneeling posture, or sitting on the ground with my legs stretched straight, utilizing the flowing skirt hem and the white fuzzy ankle cuffs to add dynamism to the frame. Especially for that high-leg-raise pose that everyone sees, it actually requires a high level of physical flexibility and balance. To stabilize my center of gravity during the shoot, I repeatedly adjusted the leg angle and the position of my supporting hand several times. Fortunately, the clothing material was quite lightweight, which didn't cause too much obstruction to large-amplitude movements; instead, it allowed the picture to present a sense of beauty that is both casual and powerful.
This Spring Unrestrained skin inherently has a highly recognizable design in the game, so for the post-processing color grading concept, I hoped to maintain its original dreamlike quality as much as possible. We didn't add excessive contrast but instead slightly lowered the shadows, allowing the entire image to present a high-key, soft light and shadow texture. The white tulle gives off a subtle sheen under the backlight, and the warm-toned wood grain and pink flower branches in the background echo the cool-toned attire on my body, making the distribution of colors more harmonious. This clean color grading method also allows those complex metal accessories and gemstone details on the apparel to stand out more prominently, preventing them from being overshadowed by a cluttered environmental color scheme.
Throughout the entire preparation and shooting process, I was actually trying to perceive and capture the character's personality. Yu Linglong seems to carry a sense of indifference toward everything while hiding a sharp edge underneath; this contrast is the key to interpretation. For the makeup, I specially chose light purple and pale pink eyeshadows to elongate my eye shape, complementing them with curled eyelashes and a translucent lip color to fit that pure-as-ice yet danger-filled temperament. Although many minor adjustments required the photographer's help due to the obstruction of the long golden fingernail armor—such as adjusting a slipping ribbon or neatening a wig fringe blown crooked by the wind—thanks to the perfect chemistry with my partner, the entire process was still exceptionally smooth and pleasant.
Many people ask me what the most important element in shooting cosplay is. I think aside from the restoration of costumes, makeup, and hair, the most core aspect is the control over the camera atmosphere. The white tulle of this look is very sheer, even faintly revealing the contours of the body lines under strong light. Therefore, how to maintain an ethereal vibe while keeping the frame from being overly revealing required the photographer to do a massive amount of homework regarding angles and lighting. We tried letting the light source come from different directions to find the angle that could best sketch out a silhouette without overexposing. That circular screen background was actually our favorite part; it's like a natural picture frame, beautifully framing the character right in the visual center. Combined with the surrounding wooden frames and layers of tulle curtains, the ancient style artistic conception brought itself out instantly.
Another issue is expressiveness. When shooting looks with a fantasy color scheme, it's easy for the images to look stiff, like a mechanical posing session. My personal habit is to stretch a bit first, find my most comfortable center of gravity, and then gradually expand the movements based on the camera's guidance. In this set of photos, whether semi-sitting on the ground supporting my body or lying sideways to display curves, I tried my best to maintain a sense of relaxation, as if I were living in that scene. When finally seeing these completed photos, I genuinely felt that all the hard work didn't go to waste. This cosplay photoshoot is not only an anime-style photography representation of the character but also another personal attempt and breakthrough in cosplay styling and expressiveness.
