Today is Misono Mika's birthday. Slipping into this iconic blue-and-white athletic jacket, putting on the pair of white wings painted with star and moon patterns, and standing in the sun-drenched outdoor playground felt like taking another step closer to that innocent, lively, halo-bearing character in Blue Archive.
When preparing for this outdoor shoot, I deliberately chose a bright afternoon. The wooden structures next to the playground rides took on a warm light yellow hue under the sunlight, creating a wonderful visual color-contrast against the dark navy base, white trims, and yellow lines of the school jacket. For the wig, I selected a silky light pink hair twin tails styled with two solid buns on top, accented with small purple flower hair accessories to ensure every detail stayed faithful to the character lore.
Since the character naturally possesses a floating halo, we left ample compositional space during the shoot for post-production effects. The pink-toned halo surrounded by starry rays, paired with the pure white star-and-moon angel wings, infused a touch of fantasy into this sporty style cosplay look. The wing props actually tended to get their feathers crushed during storage and transport, so adjusting angles repeatedly on set was necessary to make the wings look naturally extended whether viewed from the side or front.
Throughout the shoot, I switched between several pose setups across different camera positions—from a relaxed standing pose with hands in pockets to over-the-shoulder glance angles. Especially during the golden hours just before sunset, the light transitioned from golden orange to a soft glow. Draping the jacket loosely over my shoulders while standing on the rooftop, with light catching the skirt hem and bare legs, the warm light-and-shadow along with the flowing pink hair highlighted the character's unique charm even without a complex background. Furthermore, the chunky black platform canvas sneakers maximized the sporty vibe, making running and jumping look effortless and aligning perfectly with her high-energy persona.
Looking through these finished photos now, I still feel that great outdoor location records shouldn't stop at rigid reproduction; they should integrate authentic natural light and environment to deliver depth distinct from ordinary photos. For instance, the blue-green background of the amusement park climbing wall perfectly accentuated the fresh tones of the sportswear. Meanwhile, the rooftop sunset set seamlessly blended gentleness with everyday charm.
Taking this birthday as an opportunity to release this photo set that took some time to prepare feels like giving my love for this character another tangible form. Whether in costume tailoring, prop details, or the balance between makeup and post-production, dedicating heart and mind to every portrayed character is ultimately aimed at conveying her innate vitality and innocence through the lens. Happy birthday to her today! Special thanks as well to photographer @TianpingJun for the tireless captures, preserving these fleeting moments of light and shadow.
