Taking advantage of my day off, I rushed to the Western Chronicle for this Touhou Project Little devil cosplay photoshoot. Although it's just a single teaser photo for now, the fine details of the shooting process are already enough to reminisce about. Even though this look is a fan-made design, the clothing details are immensely rich—from the heavily layered white lace edges on the collar to the exquisite criss-cross laces on the black vest, the metallic accents at the waist, and the red-and-black patchwork skirt hem, the tediousness of the preparation completely exceeded expectations. Especially that pair of small black wings on the back, with their fixation points on the shoulder straps, would tilt sideways if I wasn't careful. While searching for reflection angles on the stairs, I had to repeatedly adjust my body posture to make them look naturally fitted.
During the actual shoot, trying to express that lazy yet slightly haughty temperament heavily tested my core strength. My body had to lean slightly against the metal handrail of the stairs while holding up one leg to match the composition's perspective, often keeping a single pose for over ten seconds, even suppressing my breath. My wife was downstairs helping me press the shutter with a phone; we repeatedly adjusted many times in the same spot for just one camera angle. Doing two different looks in a single day truly drained my energy. I crawled out of bed around 5 AM for makeup and hair, and by the afternoon my legs were shaking. Looking at the discarded shots in the camera and the unretouched images, I truly felt that being a cosplayer is absolutely a physical chore.
However, the environment of this Western Chronicle venue added a lot to the photos, with its black metal stairs and gray concrete walls naturally carrying a cold, hard industrial texture. This dark-toned space is a perfect match for this red hair gothic style attire. No need to force exaggerated expressions; as long as you grasp the light and shadow, that dramatic tension comes out naturally. The lighting of this teaser primarily relied on the overhead ambient lights of the venue, combined with a relatively hard main light striking down from the side-above, casting beautiful highlights on the edges of the red wig while illuminating the white sleeves and collar, forming a stark contrast against the dark background. I actually really love this snapshot feel; the black fishnet stockings and platform shoes on my legs, set against the stair steps, also made the visual center of gravity for the lower body look very solid.
Regarding the photography equipment and lighting, this time we mostly walked and shot, recording with a mobile phone for the most part. Because the reflection rate in this stairwell is quite unique, next time, if the main venue allows, we want to bring a complete light control system for specialized lighting. We'll use primary and secondary lights to carefully outline the dark details of each layer of lace on the skirt, highlight the texture of that cross accessory, while pressing the surrounding ambient light even darker to make the dark atmosphere of the entire frame more pure. That way, the effect of the final photoshoot should be even more stunning. Today, I'll release this teaser first for everyone to get a sneak peek. Once all the post-processing is done, I will properly share the final photo set from the main venue. In fact, the cuffs of this outfit, the metal chains hanging down the side of the skirt, and the red tassels possess very exquisite craftsmanship under close-up shots, and I look forward to capturing these details through more professional light and shadow next time.
