[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project Red and White Shrine Maiden Outfit, Faking a Film Vibe from Over a Decade Ago

Slipping into this classic red and white shrine maiden outfit, I headed to a tree-lined avenue in the park while the afternoon sunlight was just right to begin the shoot. The core idea of this shoot was to restore a simple and natural state, so during post-processing, I specifically researched retro filter parameters, slightly lowering the contrast and adding a touch of faded feel. Combined with the lens halos created by the backlighting, the finished photos truly have the flavor of old photos from over a decade ago.

To capture the "spinning around" effect mentioned in the post description, we actually shot many continuous takes on site, especially capturing the moments where I held my skirt hem and sleeves as they fluttered. The design of this outfit is quite interesting: the top is a midriff-baring red short top with lace trimming the neckline and cuffs, echoing the red skirt below. The lower hem of the long skirt features stitched white lace and geometric patterns, giving the traditional red and white shrine maiden outfit a lighter, cuter visual feel. The detached white wide sleeves on both sides were key props for the shoot; once spinning or jumping, the sleeves billowed out dramatically, creating great tension in the snapshot moments.

The shooting environment was chosen cleverly, specifically timed when sunlight filtered through the tree canopy with the light source directly behind the camera. This strong backlighting not only filled the entire frame with a film-like glow, but also cast long shadows and the character's reflection onto the asphalt road. When jumping, direct sunlight would hit the lens, producing beautiful flare spots—these imperfect lens flaws actually became bonus points for the photos, making the visual layers much richer.

To achieve a better pose, I repeatedly tried pushing off with one foot, balancing my center of gravity while controlling my arm angles to keep the sleeves stretched out in a fluid shape. This flowing movement actually tests core strength, especially maintaining a relaxed and natural facial expression upon landing. On my feet, I paired black leather shoes with white lace-trimmed frilly socks, creating a clear color separation against the gray asphalt. Although the overall palette consists of only red, white, and black, the detailed lace decorations keep the image from looking overly monotonous.

Giving the photos this specific vintage touch was also to align with the idea of "faking a cosplay photo from over a decade ago." Nowadays, post-processing for many cosplay works is increasingly refined and lighting pursues perfection, but the way old-school photographers from ten-plus years ago shaped characters using subtle filters and natural lighting atmospheres is actually quite nostalgic. This outdoor photography shoot did not use extra reflectors or artificial light sources, relying entirely on natural light filtering through tree gaps. After shooting, I only fine-tuned the color tones and exposure parameters; the overall tone is warm, highlighting an autumn vibe.

The tree-lined path environment matches this red and white shrine maiden outfit wonderfully. The slightly deep tones of the surrounding tree trunks and gray road perfectly set off the brightness of the red-and-white color scheme, making the character stand out even more. Every time I capture these freely stretched movements, I can genuinely feel the uninhibited vitality of the character herself. Thus, I ultimately decided to keep this aged, warm tone, preserving a visual effect imbued with a sense of era and storytelling.
