[Kazami Yuuka Cosplay] Touhou Project: Midsummer Light and Shadow in the Sunflower Field

Pre-production for this outdoor shoot took a long time—from scouting locations to confirming the peak bloom of the sunflower field and finally finishing edits, several months actually passed. Although the temperature was extremely high on the day of the shoot, seeing the final images makes every bit of effort feel totally worth it.

As for the outfit, I chose a red-and-white plaid fabric complemented by large white ruffles and black lace-up details. Paired with short light-green hair and sunflower hair accessories, this color combination fits the bright and lively feel of the flower field scene perfectly. To make the umbrella prop more thematic, I specifically tied a ring of sunflowers along the edge of the umbrella so it serves as the visual centerpiece whether folded or opened.

During the shoot, I focused most of my energy on coordination and working with light and shadow. Being an outdoor cosplay photography shoot, the ambient light changed rapidly. I arrived early at the location in Hangzhou to observe the sun's trajectory and cloud cover, ultimately deciding to concentrate formal shooting during the two hours before sunset. The light during that window was extraordinarily soft with a distinct warm tone. Backlighting rimmed my hair and skirt edges in gold, adding rich depth, while side-backlighting outlined the figure beautifully. For the sitting pose, I intentionally selected a darker forest area as the backdrop, using lighting to keep my face bright so the subject wouldn't get lost against an overly bright background.

The shooting process was actually quite tough, especially in Hangzhou's midsummer, as there was virtually no shelter in the sunflower field. Even though sunflowers are tall, direct sunlight made the perceived temperature extremely high. We moved back and forth in the field, making repeated adjustments to various poses to find the best angle while enduring mosquito bites. Holding a smile for extended periods under intense heat was truly a test of physical stamina, and the photographer's shirt was soaked through early on.

In post-processing, I refrained from using overly exaggerated filters. The biggest feature of this set lies in the natural color contrast between the scene and the outfit. The bright yellow of the sunflowers and the lush green of the leaves resonate with the red-and-white plaid dress and hair color. The editing focused mainly on restoring the authentic natural warmth of dusk while fine-tuning light-dark contrasts to make the character stand out against the complex flower field background.

This experience made me appreciate the value of Hangzhou photography booking and gave me a much more intuitive understanding of using natural light outdoors—especially managing highlight blown-out and facial shadow balances in backlit and side-backlit environments, as well as utilizing reflective props like a white umbrella to preserve catchlights in the eyes. Every outdoor session under the blazing sun tests my interpretation of the character, making me cherish these vibrant natural settings even more.
