For this on-location photoshoot of Ariel from The Little Mermaid, we selected an open-air swimming pool. In order to capture the most organic caustics and water surface reflections, ambient daylight and water temperature had to be calculated well in advance. The greatest obstacle when portraying this character lies in making an emerald tail look convincing and organic in real life. This custom-tailored tail features scaled textures that refract shimmering points of light under the sun; once submerged, however, it absorbs water and becomes remarkably heavy. Battling hydrodynamic resistance while maintaining an elegant posture required continuous core engagement. To evoke an effortless underwater suspension, photographer Baizhuan and I experimented with a clear floating lounge. Reclining across it required balancing bodily equilibrium while maintaining disciplined micro-expressions to keep from grimacing—an exhausting trial of endurance.
To achieve immaculate canonical fidelity, perfecting the crimson wig's texture proved equally crucial. Synthetic hair tangles rapidly when exposed to humidity and mist, demanding frequent detangling and makeup touch-ups between shutter bursts—particularly waterproof cosmetics engineered to withstand poolside conditions. The purple bikini top naturally deepened in shade once dampened; hence, we deliberately dodged harsh high-noon overhead sunlight, opting instead for side-backlighting around three in the afternoon. This lighting angle not only shone through the crimson tresses, but also infused the azure water with crystal-clear luminescence. Because pool chlorine affects skin and wig fibers, we minimized soaking time by wearing thermal base layers beforehand, slipping into the mermaid tail only when the camera was ready to roll.
The compositions centered primarily on organic harmony between subject and aquatic environment. While the white framing pipes of the clear float were inherently modern props, juxtaposing them against the green tail and scarlet locks formed an unexpected, striking visual focal point upon the pool surface. The caustic ripples shimmering across my skin painted an authentic yet fairy-tale light interplay. Beyond the floating lounger setups, we captured half-submerged angles leaning against the pool edge to channel a mermaid navigating the waters with effortless ease. When posing, I deliberately softened my collarbone and necklines, letting my hands drape naturally or rest lightly on the float's edge to convey an organic aquatic composure. Freezing the exact moment my tresses fanned out across the ripples demanded constant camera adjustments and repeated dips in and out of the water. Working beneath the blazing sun was exhausting, but seeing the chromatic collision of sunlight, vivid crimson hair, and the emerald tail made every ounce of labor worthwhile. I hope this collection delivers a magical fairy-tale ambiance while honoring everyone's cherished Mermaid Princess.
