[Akemi Homura Cosplay] Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Frozen Shadows of Black Wings and Red Butterflies

Wearing this dark outfit dress and those rigid black wings, looking at this set of photos under the lights feels very aligned with the atmosphere I had envisioned. In particular, the red bow hair ornament serves as the visual focus within the overall dark tone.

The structure of this costume is actually more complex than it looks. The skirt hem is made of stacked layers of black tulle and lace fabric, with ruffles on every layer, so the layering changes of the skirt are quite rich when walking and posing. The elbow-length gloves on my hands are made of a matte brownish-black material, closely fitting the contours of my arms and elongating the lines of the hands when paired with the entire ensemble. The black fishnet stockings on the lower body combine with the glossy patent leather platform heels to complete the lower-body look. The patent leather material creates a striking reflection under the lights, and the touch of red on the soles neatly echoes the red bow headpiece.

For this shoot, we intentionally selected two scenes with significantly different lighting conditions. The first photo was taken indoors, directly in front of a glass curtain wall with a grid-like frame, reflecting scattered white light points outside and on the glass. In such a dim environment, I asked the lighting technician to strike a strong flash from the front to create a high-contrast visual impact. This highlighted facial features and costume details while turning the background environment into a black-textured canvas that matched the depressing tone of the setting.

The second photo moved to an outdoor or concrete ground setting. Here, the lighting was harder and slanted, casting very crisp and sharp shadows on the flat gray floor. Although this direct light outlined the character clearly, it was somewhat harsh, requiring me to adjust my pose so that shadows either fell on the skirt to add texture or avoided my face to prevent blown-out highlights. When taking the leaning-back pose in Photo 2, making the huge black wings rest smoothly on the ground without losing aesthetic shape was a process of repeated trial and error.

Throughout the entire shooting process, the trickiest part was actually the wing styling—this massive piece. The material was quite stiff and had some weight, which restricted movement when making pose adjustments. To keep it from looking stiff in front of the lens, I had to use power from my back and shoulders when bending over or leaning back to alter its angle and let it spread out gracefully from behind.

When performing the dialogue mentioned in the post description, I focused my emphasis on the gaze and the relaxation of facial expressions. Keeping my gaze level and slightly downward, with an expression of nearly aloof calm—without forcing a smile or frowning—naturally conveyed that cool, resolute feeling. For makeup, earth-toned eyeshadows deepened the contours, which, combined with pale base makeup, kept the face looking stern and composed under both harsh and low light.

This set of photos recorded two styling states under completely different lighting characteristics: the indoor high-contrast dark tones and the outdoor sharp hard light. They gave me a more concrete understanding of how this outfit performs in different environments and clarified how to convey the atmospheric setting I interpreted through camera language.
