During the spring cherry blossom season, I shot a Japanese-style theme for Madoka Kaname. Instead of wearing the traditional magical girl battle uniform this time, I chose a light-colored yukata with a cherry blossom pattern to echo the drifting white cherry blossom petals (sakurafubuki) in the background.
In terms of makeup and styling, to match Madoka's inherent cuteness, the base makeup was kept light and translucent, and the eye makeup was not too heavy, preserving the character's original touch of gentle beauty. The pink wig was trimmed with straight bangs and her iconic twin tails. The red square hair accessories and white ribbons are the soul of the look and were securely fastened.
We encountered excellent natural light during the shoot. This diffuse sunlight hitting the cherry blossom trees created a soft filter effect. To enrich the composition, I discussed with the photographer and added a red umbrella as a prop. The red wagasa (Japanese paper umbrella) complemented the vermilion bridge railing behind me perfectly. This strong red-and-white contrast allowed the character to stand out in the bright sea of flowers, visually creating a warm spring atmosphere.
The shooting process was actually easier than expected, but walking back and forth on the stone paths and bridge in thick-soled geta (wooden clogs) was definitely a test of balance. The geta clacked against the wooden bridge planks, and with petals falling on my shoulders, it felt incredibly immersive. There is a candid shot of me looking back and another profile shot leaning against the bridge, which beautifully captured a lazy and slightly innocent expression. I really love the sense of storytelling in these photos.
When choosing the kimono or yukata, I specially selected a style with wide sleeves. This way, when the wind blows, the sleeves flutter, and paired with the tilt of the umbrella, it creates a stronger sense of dynamism in the photos.
The overall color tone of this set presents a high-key Japanese cherry blossom season portrait style. No overly complex post-processing filters were used, preserving more of the natural colors and light transitions. Being in such a beautiful blossom season and using the lens to capture specific moments of the character is not just completing a look, but an extension of the character's personality in another setting.
