Gripping this tactical sniper rifle prop measuring over a meter long and leaning casually against the stone balustrade of the Chinese garden was my favorite state in this shoot. When I decided to do this look, I had already envisioned the unique contrast between the prop's imposing scale and the outfit's styling, and seeing it now, this combination proved remarkably successful.
Let's talk about the costume details first. The black altered mini cheongsam is tailored snugly to fit the silhouette, featuring two green accent stripes along the collar that balance the heaviness of the black fabric. The most eye-catching headwear is a pair of teal-green bows paired with beast ears; the gradient colors of the hair accessories look richly textured under sunlight, complementing the twin-tail wig to make the whole persona lively with a hint of playfulness. To preserve the character's signature traits, White over-the-knee socks were an absolute must, which, combined with black flat Mary Jane buckle shoes, visually elongated the lower body proportions.
Regarding posing, leaning against the railing offered several advantages: first, it provided a natural resting point to relax my posture without looking stiff; second, bending one leg created natural folds in the white stockings at the knee while accentuating the lines of the calves and ankles—a practical posing technique to highlight styling details. The angle of the prop rifle was also adjusted across several takes, propping it diagonally across my body to display the white painted decals without blocking the character's main silhouette.
Sunlight was abundant on shooting day, casting crisp shadows across the bluestone pavement. Such hard natural lighting is usually tricky to manage, but fortunately, the white garden walls acted as great natural reflectors, providing ample fill light across the face. Background elements like moon gates, dark-tiled eaves, rockeries, and ponds infused the frame with rich classical Chinese aesthetic charm. To emphasize the character, we chose a wide-aperture telephoto lens to softly blur the lush greenery and architecture behind me, delivering clear depth of field and an ideal contrast between the subject's sharpness and the background's soft bokeh.
Speaking of the biggest challenge of this outdoor shoot, it was definitely the length and weight of the prop sniper rifle. While it looked impressive on camera, navigating stone pathways and gardens required constant caution to avoid bumping into stone railings or foliage. Fortunately, the weather was pleasant and the shoot went smoothly. I aimed to capture effortless, candid moments like looking back naturally over my shoulder rather than striking flat, hollow poses. Judging by the finished photos, integrating anime cosplay elements into a deeply classical setting creates immense visual impact. The black mini dress, White over-the-knee socks, and dark prop weapon against the verdant garden backdrop maintained restrained color choices while achieving high recognizability.
During the shoot, we also experimented with various body orientations, such as slightly turning sideways in the final shot to reveal more surface area of the prop while showing off shoulder lines. For energetic character styling like this, facial expressions don't need to be overly complicated—keeping the gaze slightly relaxed with a cool or detached look, harmonized with lighting and framing, yielded very natural results. The overall cosplay experience was fantastic; the Chinese garden provided an exceptional stage for this costume, while the tactical prop added plenty of intrigue and narrative depth to the imagery.
