[Xishi Cosplay] The Legendary Grace and Melancholy in Honor of Kings

When approaching this Xishi cosplay, my main goal was to blend her ethereal, delicate beauty with a touch of unique tragic compassion. The line from the lore, "May our love remain forever like this, unable to bear the grief of parting," played a major role in setting the emotional tone for the makeup and styling. Therefore, I decided to forego overly harsh highlights in favor of a soft matte finish, bringing the skin texture as close to a flawless doll-like smoothness as possible, which harmonized beautifully with the subtle pink gradient of the hair.

Let's talk about the details of this look. I chose a pale pink wig with a silver sheen. Because the hair color itself was already very ethereal, keeping it clean without mixing in cluttered colors was key. The front bangs were trimmed to a perfect length just above the eyes. The side braids were crucial—not only are they a signature element of Xishi, but I also intentionally threaded thin dark red ribbons through the braids so they naturally wove into the styling, echoing the dark neck choker and keeping the visuals balanced.

The headpiece was filled with delicate details. A small, refined crown studded with tiny red gems sat at the top as the visual focal point. Above the left ear were purple gems and a golden flower base, while the right ear featured a pink flower accent with gold details. This asymmetrical arrangement effectively broke up any visual monotony, making the look lively and glamorous.

I also spent quite some time considering the neck accessory layering to avoid leaving too much blank space. Closest to the neck was a wide red-and-gold choker, complemented by two delicate chains below—one black and one gold, one long and one short—along with a stylized bird-shaped metal pendant in the middle. This accessory set really captured the spirit of the look. The deep tone of the pendant grounded the light pink-and-white color scheme beautifully.

For the outfit, I opted for a pink translucent mesh top. The off-the-shoulder design paired with thin white straps made the posture look exceptionally slender and delicate. Layers of sheer ruffles around the arms stacked together to create a cloud-like lightness, while the carved golden metal prop held in hand balanced the visuals and added weight through its ornate patterns.

For the photoshoot, we specifically utilized natural light and side-backlighting. The lighting in the second photo created a soft halo around the hair edges, maximizing the airy texture of the wig and the dreamy, ethereal ambiance. I also tailored my makeup by deepening the shades around the eye sockets to evoke a dreamy, melancholic gaze, fitting the mood of "unable to bear the grief of parting."

To hold that complex golden prop naturally, we adjusted hand poses repeatedly; because of its intricate design, holding it naturally without looking heavy was quite a challenge. Throughout the shoot, the photographer kept reminding me to relax my shoulders to embody her delicate, wind-swayed poise. Although it took many retakes, seeing the final shot where light filtered through the pink mesh onto my collarbone, revealing a translucent beauty, made every effort completely worth it.

Overall, cosplaying an ornate character with traditional Chinese style makeup and styling requires immense patience and stamina, but I thoroughly enjoyed turning the vision in my head into photos.
