This red and white plaid maid outfit truly dials the sweetness up to the maximum. Without forcing any complicated poses, the goal was simply to capture that natural and energetic sweet girl vibe.

The outfit actually has quite rich details. A red and white plaid bandana and cuffs match the red camisole top, draped in a layered fluffy white tulle skirt. The skirt is accented with cherries and ribbons, creating an airy, puffy silhouette whenever I move. For the lower half, pure white over-the-knee socks complement the red and white palette seamlessly. The model in the photos is me, Xiaoyi, for this Xiaoyi photobook series.

Two camera bodies were used for this indoor portrait session—the Sony A7C2 and A7R3, paired with 35mm and 50mm prime lenses. The 35mm focal length is ideal for establishing spatial context in a home setting. Whether leaning against the sofa or sitting on the edge of the bed, it naturally incorporates everyday elements like the window, TV, and couch into the frame, giving the portrait an authentic narrative feel. The 50mm lens was dedicated to capturing facial expressions and emotional nuances; in close-ups, eye details and subtle emotions come through with absolute clarity. The post-processing steered clear of exaggerated color grading, preserving the soft, natural ambient light of the room to achieve a clean and airy texture.

Props were a huge help throughout the shoot. A white teddy bear, a beige rabbit plush, and a freshly prepared croissant served as great interactive tools. Leaning on the sofa while hugging the bear, touching a finger lightly to the lips, and casting a slightly lazy gaze made the shots come alive. Looking down at the rabbit's ears created a naturally quiet moment that looked effortless without having to stare directly into the lens. Holding the croissant up beside my face added a funny touch because of its size—I could barely keep from laughing while shooting it. Another lively shot features me sitting on the sofa with legs extended, holding a plushie in one hand while poking my cheek and winking with the other. While shooting in white over-the-knee socks, posing and leg lines require careful adjustment, so we experimented with several seating angles by the sofa to create better depth.

The whole shooting process was very relaxed. Since it was an indoor setup, the lighting relied primarily on natural daylight through the window, supported by soft indoor fill lights. This gentle lighting setup is very comfortable on the eyes during long sessions. While I have worn this maid outfit cosplay before, we tweaked the hair and makeup this time—straight bangs paired with rosy blush perfectly matched the energetic sweet girl aesthetic. Looking through the previews, the creamy bokeh of the 50mm prime beautifully separated the subject from the slightly busy backdrop.

Between sets, I checked the playback and discussed adjustments for the next poses with the photographer. For instance, getting the wink right took several attempts, as winking with one eye while keeping the rest of the facial muscles relaxed requires some finesse. When holding plush toys, arm placement also matters—keeping the shoulders dropped and relaxed avoids stiffness. Because the outfit is fairly elaborate, overly dramatic movements might disrupt the tulle skirt's shape, so emotional expression relied mainly on eye contact and subtle expressions. The dark sofa and background walls offered a rich contrast against the lightness of the white tulle dress. Seeing the final results, these ordinary everyday corners really popped under the warm light and red plaid accents. Ultimately, for sweet-style photography, the secret is simply being relaxed—treat the camera like a friend, and genuine, adorable moments will naturally follow.
