Bringing Xiao Wu's Divine Outfit to the classical gardens and historic architectural courtyards of Xi'an, we completed this on-location photoshoot. Without the controlled lighting of an indoor studio, the entire shoot revolved around chasing the shifting natural light.
Let's dive into the details of this divine attire and styling. The classic pink-white-purple color palette looked stunning under natural daylight. The silver-gray metallic accents spliced with purple fabric on the bodice, down to the intricate openwork edging, were crafted with great delicacy. The pink rabbit-ear headpiece was solidly structured inside, staying firmly upright. The accompanying silver-gray forehead circlet clung smoothly to the brow without slipping. For hair, I went with a deep brown long high ponytail, prepped with generous styling spray to withstand outdoor breezes and treated at the tips against frizz. For makeup, matching her character meant emphasizing the eyes: crimson contact lenses paired with blended pinkish eyeshadow, extending the eyeliner slightly outward. Due to intense outdoor UV exposure, setting spray and translucent powder were used heavily, which successfully kept the makeup from breaking down all day.
Shooting this series was physically demanding. Clambering up and down rockeries was necessary to achieve flattering angles. The white pantyhose Stockings patterned with silver motifs fit like a second skin, but pairing them with silver high heels over rough stones and along the water made walking precarious, requiring the photographer to keep a watchful eye to prevent slips. Displaying clean leg lines alongside the flutter of the skirt demanded repeated shifts in balance. Sitting beside the water also required constant vigilance so the hemlines wouldn't plunge into the pond. The cinched waistline of the garment was quite tight; to maintain an elongated silhouette before the lens, reset breaks required taking a deep breath and readjusting posture.
The ponds, waterfalls, and antique pavilions in the backdrop infused the frames with immense poetic ambiance. Despite passing visitors watching, once fully in character, only the lens and character expression remained in mind. In pose design, the goal was balancing agility with inner strength. Poses like the raised-leg stance tested core stability on stone pavers given the heels' limited traction. Insects were another outdoor challenge, making bug repellent essential when posing near brush in sheer stockings. Post-processing focused on balancing organic light and shadow while preserving authentic skin textures.
Overall, every outdoor shoot is a process of overcoming unpredictable challenges—from wardrobe and prop prep to spontaneous on-set adaptations, every single detail counts. I hope this series lets everyone feel the radiant charm of Xiao Wu.
