[Dusk cosplay] Arknights: Traditional Chinese Style Illusion, Aloof Serenity Amidst Teal Ink Wash

This set of Arknights Dusk cosplay photos is finally sorted out—from initial concept planning to typography layout and Photography post-processing, it took about two weeks on and off. The set includes one collage graphic and two solo photos. As I often say when posting photos, the aesthetic difference between graphic collage layouts and clean solo frames is immense. The graphic layout (Photo 1), accented with poetic typography and bold white brushstrokes, feels more narrative and cinematic like a movie poster, though it inevitably draws some visual attention away from the subject herself. Therefore, I specifically chose the second solo photo as the cover; its composition is more focused, with the low-key calligraphy and arrows serving as wonderful accompaniments without visual clutter, fully preserving the long leg lines seated on the wooden table and the character's overarching presence.

Let's talk about the shoot itself. The workload was substantial, mainly because we built dedicated practical sets to match the character's lore. The backdrop was a printed calligraphy texture screen; to add depth and translucency, we hung a sheer gauze curtain in front and illuminated it from behind with strong lights, creating a flowing water-ripple illusion across the fabric. A reflective surface was used for the floor to evoke water reflections, perfectly matching her setting within an ink-wash dreamscape.

Prop-wise, the greatsword and arrows were the highlights. The sword is genuinely heavy—holding it placed considerable strain on the wrist. Wearing high heels while sitting on a backless square wooden table required constant engagement of leg strength to maintain balance and avoid slipping, all while managing facial expressions and emotional eye contact, demanding intense concentration in every fleeting second.

The teal jacquard weave of the costume showed clear detail under cool-toned lights, while red tassels and headpieces served as vibrant accents to prevent the overall frame from feeling dull. A lot of effort went into the solo frames in post-production: refining light-and-shadow gradients and adding faint mist effects to enhance translucency, perfectly aligning with the character's aloof and solitary aura.

When I first started designing the layout, I spent a long time thinking about where to place text. The final graphic layout featured two poetic lines paired with sweeping white brushstrokes, achieving great artistic mood; yet the solo frames remain visually superior, as unedited framing concentrates the viewer's focus on costume details, the hand holding the sword, and the elongated leg contours. Thus, for the cover choice, I still favored the second solo photo free of typography interference, as it best expresses physical dynamism and frame serenity.

During the shoot, the photographer and I continuously adjusted poses. For instance, in the second solo photo where I sit on the table extending my leg forward-side, it looks deceptively simple but tests flexibility extensively: keeping the back straight while tensing the leg muscles in heels to make the leg silhouette appear long, slender, and crisp. The third photo of looking down while holding the sword required subtle eye coordination. Meanwhile, the lighting technician kept fine-tuning light positions to strike from the side, outlining the silhouette cleanly.

This endeavor granted me rich experience in water-reflective props and sheer curtain illumination. Balancing the ambient environment and skin tones in Low-key photography is a tricky challenge, which we successfully resolved through lighting and Photography post-processing. Facing similar traditional Chinese style dark-toned shoots in the future, I now have accurate lighting setups and parameters ready. Releasing these photos serves as a fulfilling milestone for this period's preparations. Although it was tiring—wearing high heels for consecutive hours left my calves sore—seeing the final textural quality made every bit of hard work worthwhile.
