[Shu cosplay] Arknights Sui Siblings: Moonlit Reunion of Sisters

Bringing this shoot of the Sui Siblings Shu and Jie from Arknights to fruition took over two weeks from initial planning to final edits. Looking at the finished frames, every ounce of relentless effort poured into wardrobe, makeup, and props was completely worthwhile.

To dive into the most demanding preparation: because these characters possess pronounced Eastern fantasy elements, styling the wigs required immense dedication. To ensure the white-to-blue gradient transition felt fluid and organic rather than rigid, we washed, trimmed, and conditioned the synthetic fibers repeatedly. The sculpted dragon horn props atop my head were custom-crafted and carried substantial physical heft; to keep them anchored steadily throughout the session, we built inner structural scaffolding beneath the wig base, securing it with a generous array of hairpins and reinforced wig caps. My cosplay partner portraying Jie invested just as much effort dialing in her horn ornaments and side braided styles—especially perfecting the scarlet cord accents at the braid ends, which echoed the geometric block embroidery on her robes seamlessly.

The wardrobe layers are exceptionally intricate: layered floor-length robes over an off-shoulder white base, cinched by ornate sash cords, golden macrame knots, and pearl bead strands that each had to be fitted and calibrated individually. In terms of props, the leather-bound books, calligraphy brushes, and the plush golden tail served not only as visual accents, but also as ergonomic anchors for fluid posing. To capture authentic sisterly chemistry during our dual takes, we tested diverse blocking setups. For instance, in the book study scene, I had to angle my torso slightly so ambient highlights traced my jawline cleanly while keeping shoulder posture disciplined. The back-to-back seated posture looked deceptively relaxed, but maintaining straight spine alignment while fanning out robe hems into soft pools of fabric demanded continuous core and lower back engagement.

The studio lighting setups were divided into warm and cool environments. Under warm illumination, side-rim lighting caressed the textiles, pulling out the jacquard weaves and metallic thread embroidery with vivid clarity. Conversely, the nocturnal set featured an oversized luminous full moon backdrop paired with floral branches, where cool key lights combined with the approaching Mid-Autumn festival aesthetic to wrap the frames in ethereal, aloof tranquility. Photographer @ShopManagerDD📷 brought seasoned expertise to geometric framing and lighting direction, guiding our seated alignments and eyelines across multiple passes. For example, the staggered foreground-background seating in Figure 4 showcased the back embroidery while giving the plush tail ample room to drape naturally, whereas the symmetrical back-to-back framing in Figure 2 against the glowing moon created fierce compositional gravity.

Sustaining the shoot demanded serious physical stamina given the heavy, layered silk robes and the need to preserve an effortless, regal aura. Yet thanks to seamless collaborative chemistry and our shared understanding of the Sui Siblings' lore, we slipped into character before the lens with ease. This production balances gentle, affectionate sisterly interplay with individual, resolute persona traits. The resulting layered traditional Chinese visual aesthetic was a truly breathtaking triumph.
