[Moriya Suwako cosplay] Winter Bamboo Forest Stream: An Off-Season Outdoor Photoshoot Challenge

The true experience of an off-season warrior is standing in biting, freezing stream water amidst the cold winds of late 2024. This time I cosplayed Moriya Suwako from Touhou Project. To faithfully recreate the essence of this Blonde Western-style dress character, plenty of costume details were prepared, including the lace-trimmed straw hat, wig, pearl chains, and gold ornaments. Photo 3 captures the perspective of adjusting the skirt hem in the water; honestly, the icy temperature beneath the surface far exceeded expectations, leaving my fingers numb almost instantly. The shoot took place in a winter bamboo grove where the crystal-clear Bamboo forest stream reflected the purple-and-white palette of the outfit. Because of the intense cold, I mostly chose to crouch by the water's edge or, as in Photo 2, hold a green leaf to diffuse the light. Since the skirt was too long to wade easily and the ribbons easily absorbed water and grew heavy, I specifically chose poses that minimized leg exposure to keep the costume intact. The lighting inside the bamboo grove was quite dim, so the photographer utilized water reflections to illuminate my face, which put a lot of importance on facial expressions. This winter Off-season outdoor photoshoot took most of the day, leaving my shoes completely soaked. Looking through these photos now, despite the physical hardship, the atmospheric depth captured in the frames makes all the effort feel completely worthwhile.
