This shoot is a set of dreamy portrait photography featuring the character Patchouli. The overall look is dominated by soft taro purple and lotus-root pink, paired with an extremely complex Lolita fashion dress. The fabric of the clothing uses lightweight translucent tulle and jacquard material with subtle patterns, which, combined with layers of exaggerated ruffles, lace trims, and a huge aqua-blue bow on the chest, creates a strong sense of dimension and luxury in texture. The headwear continues the dreamy characteristics of the outfit: a bonnet sewn with pearls and tassel pendants, along with two round balls resembling bear ears on top, adds a touch of playfulness to the character. The long purple hair paired with matching colored contacts and the highly recognizable monocle further recreate the intellectual yet slightly lazy magician traits of this character.
For the scene setup, an indoor environment with a black retro leather sofa, white flower decorations, an iron birdcage, and translucent white tulle was chosen. The deep black leather furniture and the gorgeous light pink-purple dress form a very strong contrast in brightness and material, which helps concentrate the visual focus better on the person. Many real props were added during the shoot, such as a hardcover book with a golden retro starburst pattern printed on the cover, and real burning candles. These props not only enrich the content of the frame but also add a sense of story to the character's setting. In terms of utilizing light and shadow, the photographer cleverly used a cool blue ambient light source to create a mysterious, chilly feeling in the background, while using warm candlelight and artificial warm light to fill the face. This interplay of warm and cool lighting makes the skin tone look more translucent and delicate, and it also beautifully outlines the wrinkles and layers of the clothing. I mainly adopted relaxed and lazy postures in front of the lens, such as curling up on the seat, leaning, holding a candle, and flipping through a book, striving to capture those quiet moments of the character immersed in a private study and isolated from the outside world.
For the makeup design, to match the overall dreamy texture, the base makeup specifically emphasized a dewy and lightweight feel, while the eye makeup used faint purple and pink shimmering eyeshadow swept across the eye sockets to create a blurry, clear look. The lip color was chosen in a milk-tea tone to better coordinate with the low-saturation color palette of the clothing. A highlight in the composition of this set of photos is the full utilization of the foreground tulle and background floral arrangements to combine reality and illusion. It not only highlights the main subject but also makes the entire frame breathe and layer like a classical oil painting. The shooting time was actually quite long, and maintaining high-intensity expression management and relaxed body language was a challenge, but the final photo results were well worth it. From customizing and modifying the costume to repeatedly debugging the lights, and finally to the moment the shutter was pressed, the cooperation in every step was very smooth. The final image quality truly conveyed Patchouli's elegant, intellectual, and slightly stay-at-home character traits very well, making it a very pleasant dreamy vintage photography experience.
