This time, I did the Magical Girl series look of Sirin from Honkai Impact 3rd. The core atmosphere of the entire project is a purple dreamy feel. The shooting venue was specially decorated with a European-style vintage indoor environment, cooperating with a massive number of crystal candelabras, birdcages, fresh flowers, and scattered real petals. Combined with the starburst sparkle effects added in post-production, it instantly turned the fairytale feel of the Magical Girl cosplay up to the max.
Regarding the details of the styling, first is this light purple long curly wig. To reflect that flowing sensation of the character, it specially underwent multi-layered thinning and hair strand extension processing, and its luster performance under the lights is exceptionally good. The elements of the headband and bows serve as the crowning touch, increasing the character's playfulness. The costume section adopts an off-the-shoulder design paired with a halter strap, which beautifully displays the shoulder and neckline. The coat features a gradient from deep purple to black, and the oversleeves and dress hem carry a certain sense of drape. The heavy focus lies in the irregular cut of the skirt hem, as well as the large red flowers paired with gold star decorations on both sides of the waist, which serve as an excellent visual highlight within the purple-dominated frame. The purple crisscross straps on the legs and the matching arm guards on the arms make the layers of the entire outfit even richer.
During the shoot, I intentionally designed the movements in combination with the scene. Aside from flashing the familiar 'V' hand gesture at the camera, I also tried many contrasting postures between stillness and motion. For example, sitting on a vintage sofa holding a book projected the state of a quiet, reading magical girl; whereas leaping on a single leg or interacting with that multi-refractive star prop completely released my lively and agile side. The photographer was excellent at catching light; the warm candlelight overhead, the purple ambient light, and the main light source hitting my body cooperated exceptionally naturally, making the transition between highlights and shadows very comfortable.
Actually, a lot of thought went into the scene setup prior to shooting this set of photos. We had to arrange that European-style vanity mirror, iron birdcage, flowers, and stars very compactly, both to ensure rich elements in the frame and to avoid looking cluttered. During the shoot, special attention was also paid to grooming the wig; this kind of long hair is very easy to entangle or get caught by props, so it had to be combed through every single time a posture was changed. The hand-held star prop is actually translucent, capable of refracting rainbow-colored halos when hit by intense light, and the starburst effects in the image were extended to match the prop's texture, giving the magical girl feel more of a tangible reality.
As a cosplay enthusiast for many years, I kept researching the original settings when creating this character, hoping to find Sirin's confident, mysterious, yet slightly mischievous temperament through makeup and facial expressions. The purple-pink eye makeup paired with slightly upturned eyeliner and exquisite lip makeup can instantly grab eyeballs before the lens. Although this suit of clothing features quite a lot of accessories, making the steps to wear it highly tedious, seeing the final output results at that single moment made me feel that all efforts were completely worth it.
I also recommend to cosplayers who want to shoot a similar Magical Girl style to definitely pay attention to the light and shadow quality of the venue. This kind of soft, dark-toned environment actually places exceptionally high demands on lighting. If the light isn't handled well, the frame will look dirty, and the model's skin tone won't be translucent enough. The lighting technician this time was highly professional, distributing the purple ambient lighting onto the walls and the character with a clear distinction between primary and secondary sources, preserving the dark-toned texture while highlighting the character's multi-dimensional feel. It can be said that the reason this cosplay photoshoot manages to have this dreamlike magical girl texture is that, aside from the recreation of costumes and props, the lighting and post-production retouching are truly indispensable.
