I cosplayed Hoshino this time. Although I've cosplayed her many times before, whenever I slip into this white off-the-shoulder dress with blue ribbons, put on that airy pink halo, and wear the heterochromatic contacts, that relaxed, languid feeling naturally surfaces. I've always loved Hoshino's unique gap-charm of looking like an "uncle on the outside, gentle on the inside." That's why in these convention photos, I wanted to capture her slightly sleepy yet adorable everyday ambiance as much as possible.
The environment for shooting this convention photo was actually quite interesting, situated right in a side hall of the venue. The glossy floor tiles were intensely reflective, mirroring the strip lights on the ceiling like glass and giving the whole photo set a cool, crisp translucency. Special thanks to the photographer for his patience and creativity; in such a vast, chaotic event venue, he created a compact, exquisite stage for us with just a white circular plush rug and professional lighting rigs. Stepping barefoot onto the plush rug felt incredibly cozy—compared to rushing around the convention in flip-flops, my soles felt genuinely liberated in that moment.
I also have to mention how comfortable this outfit was. The white ruffled minidress was light and breezy, and the strap design allowed full freedom of shoulder movement without any constriction while posing. The matching small blue whale crossbody bag was the icing on the cake; though small, pairing it with this look instantly maximized both the youthful charm and everyday feel of the character. The pink wig exhibited very soft color transitions under the convention hall lights without looking cheap, and while the halo on top looks delicate, its geometric aesthetic made character recognition instant once worn.
To make these photos great, we experimented with several styles—standing straight while acting cute, sitting down hugging my knees, and casually kneeling on the floor looking back like an uncle. Having frequented conventions, I know that capturing relaxed, natural convention photos hinges on achieving genuine ease. My expressions in the photos weren't overly exaggerated; they were mostly an instinctive spacing out, synced with the photographer's shutter to capture that casual freshness. During the shoot, nearby event staff and attendees occasionally stopped to watch, finding it quite amusing how we laid out a rug inside the venue to do an impromptu "studio shoot."
When the raw photos came back, I was extremely pleased with the results. Even though they are convention photos, the texture achieved through the lighting and composition was on par with a dedicated studio shoot. Truth be told, every time I cosplay Hoshino, that "uncle wants to sleep" fatigue is 100% real. Running around the comic con all day while enduring the heavy wig and contact lenses for an intense shoot made it hard to even keep my eyes open toward the end. But seeing how relaxed and natural I looked in the photos made every bit of effort feel worthwhile.
Quality convention photos are the greatest reward for one's effort and the best record of this convention journey. I hope this crisp, breezy white dress look conveys Hoshino's signature languid and healing vibe.
