This shoot brought to life a derivative concept for Hsin from Wuthering Waves. As a cosplayer, every time I receive reference art or conceive a character, the most grueling yet exhilarating part is material accuracy and pattern adjustments. To deliver the striking visual impact of the classic red, black, and white palette, patterning the garments and selecting materials took substantial dedication. The primary top is a black fitted bodysuit—a cut highly unforgiving on physique that demands rigorous pre-shoot posture control. To break up the solid black, I added gold-trimmed gemstone ornaments at the bust and layered an outer flowing robe of sheer red-and-white tulle. This double-layered gossamer creates a semi-translucent effect under studio lights and flows with airy elegance in motion, though it readily snags and tangles during shooting, requiring constant vigilance over fabric drape.

Styling the wig and animal ears was the centerpiece of the look. To capture Hsin's celestial fox presence, I selected straight, pure white hair; the plush ears atop required repeated adjustments, anchored with double layers of bobby pins and styling spray to ensure they looked naturally animated from every camera angle without looking like stiff plastic. For makeup, I moved away from routine daily palettes in favor of sweeping crimson eyeshadow blending paired with red cosmetic contacts, finished with a red diamond sigil painted at the center of the forehead to maximize that supernatural, otherworldly agility. The skin base had to be immaculate: against the fierce contrast of red and white, skin needed a refined, velvety matte finish.

The shooting location was an indoor studio featuring classical wooden lattice screens and draped sheer curtains. To evoke an ethereal atmosphere, the set was staged with ornate palace lanterns, white sakura branches, and pink lotus blooms with green pads in the foreground. This layered arrangement used foreground depth-of-field masking to add rich dimensionality, preventing the subject from appearing flat in the frame. For this panoramic full-body shot, I stood barefoot across the wooden steps with legs crossed. Holding this stance tested core strength to the limit—keeping the torso lifted while anchoring my center of gravity on one leg. Holding the fan in my right hand while raising my left arm skyward, the wrist had to curve with gentle yet deliberate grace to elongate leg lines and highlight the garment's high-slit tailoring. I deliberately flicked the red-and-white robe flounces into dynamic arcs so the photographer could freeze spontaneous kinetic beauty.

We communicated at length with the photographer regarding lighting design. Ultimately, the key light illuminated facial features and body contours while background shadows were deliberately dialed down, crafting a visual contrast where the character appeared self-luminous. A warm-toned rim light brushed against the sheer curtains and skin glow. The session demanded relentless bodily control: handling the traditional round fan required classical oriental poise while aligning with clean modern 2D framing. Standing barefoot on hard wooden boards for hours brought genuine fatigue and aching soles, yet every frame saw me recalibrating balance and muscle tension—gripping toes and tightening leg lines were essential for clean aesthetics. In post-production, I explicitly requested preserving natural skin textures and highlighting the luster of metallic pendants and sheer chiffon without excessive softening. This cosplay project was a brand-new endeavor uniting 2D fantasy elements with classical architectural beauty to project Hsin's multidimensional allure through wardrobe, props, lighting, and physical expression.

Many friends ask why I love portraying characters steeped in oriental fantasy; to me, a concept like Hsin carries innate dramatic tension. When preparing props, the classical round fan trimmed with golden tassels was a quintessential accent, its soft pink face creating a gentle contrast against the dominant red, black, and white palette. Between takes, I checked playback monitors repeatedly to tweak how I held the fan, as subtle variations in finger tension dramatically alter visual refinement. Gauze drapes fluttering in the studio under ceiling strobes gave the genuine illusion of stepping into an alternate realm. Every shutter release felt like a deep spiritual dialogue with the character. From early conception to final delivery, this official cosplay set by cn Xia Nai took over a month of dedicated work, with heartfelt devotion poured into every single detail.
