This outdoor Cosplay photography session for Exusiai the New Covenant from Arknights was scheduled for late summer—just as the copy reads, summer draws to a close, and the cicadas' hum fades into memory. The location chosen was a park lawn beside an urban viaduct, blessed with dense tree shade and ample sunshine. To ensure optimal image quality, I carefully steamed and arranged the outfit beforehand. The vivid red wig is remarkably striking styled into a high ponytail; to make the halo prop above my head appear floating naturally on camera, I spent considerable time adjusting its mounting angle and elevation.
For the wardrobe styling, a black vest was layered over a crisp white shirt, with orange-yellow tinted sunglasses hooked casually at the collar. A brown leather belt cinched the waist over a deep navy-and-white striped fabric wrap, paired with black shorts below, white bandages wrapped around the left bicep, and a small green-and-white accessory clipped to the flank. To accentuate her character hallmarks, I repeatedly confirmed the placement of these accents so nothing would shift during extended outdoor walking.
The three photos chronicle three distinct states I designed for this cosplay. The first is a three-quarter standing stance with one hand resting beside my head, effectively showing off leg lines and garment proportions, where the pairing of black ankle boots and shorts visually elongated the lower body. For the second shot, I sat cross-legged on the grass, turning my face toward the lens to portray a relaxed breather between battles. The third frame captures me looking up toward the sky with an outstretched hand, taking advantage of dappled light filtering through the canopy; backlit, the red-haired cosplayer outfit revealed gorgeous dimension in the hair alongside organic light and shadow textures.
The late-summer outdoor heat remained an endurance trial: the heavy wig and multi-layered garments felt quite warm under the direct sun. To keep the makeup clean and matte, I touched up my face and brushed through the wig to prevent tangling with every camera shift. Moving across uneven grass in boots also required caution to avoid stumbling. The sleek, modern architecture of the viaduct contrasted beautifully with the organic growth of the trees; during shooting, I intentionally framed bridge piers and foliage in the background, utilizing a wide aperture to blur them softly and craft a sense of atmospheric depth between subject and space.
Working with natural daylight outdoors has been a constant learning curve in managing contrast ratios, especially since bright crimson hair blows out easily under intense sun. For the first and second shots, I stayed along the edge of tree shade or stepped down the exposure slightly. Every outdoor shoot demands striking a balance between physical stamina and frame quality. Seeing the final interplay of light, shadow, and texture, all the meticulous preparations were entirely worthwhile.
