When editing this set of Theresa cosplay photos, I was constantly battling the thick wig and annoying shadows. Because I wanted to recreate that serene yet mysterious aura of the character, the hair was styled very thickly. While this hair volume definitely delivered ample atmosphere, under dim lighting conditions, it precisely and tightly shrouded my cheeks, resulting in harsh, dead-black shadows across my face. During post-processing, I had to manually dodge and paint in light bit by bit to balance the obscured facial contours.
The theme for this shoot was positioned as a Dark style vintage Gothic style. During pre-shoot preparations, we prepared an abundance of props—such as silver crosses, candlesticks of varying heights, dark red grapes and apples, as well as vintage glass wine bottles. Just arranging these still-life props took a lot of time, placing them at multi-layered angles so they played active roles in both foreground and background. The warm glow of candlelight contrasted sharply against the pitch-black backdrop, instantly elevating the atmospheric mood. Photographer "@世界上有鱼" maintained meticulous control on set, guiding me to lean sideways or tilt slightly, using the lateral candlelight to rim-light the contours of my face. This not only avoided frontal shadows to some extent, but also preserved three-dimensional depth in the light and shadow.
Energy consumption on the day of the shoot was enormous: with so many props and a low-key dark set, the margin for error with lighting angles was extremely low. Consequently, every shutter press required repeated adjustments, making progress very slow. This truly proved that saying—it was genuinely a high-cost, low-yield session. Due to the unpredictable nature of lighting, we repeatedly tested various angles and poses; for instance, in the third photo, I intentionally leaned against the edge of the table with my body tilted, letting the black top open naturally to present a more sculpted silhouette. Fortunately, the resulting photos had great texture, making all the effort worthwhile.
In post-processing, I focused on preserving the highlights from the candlelight, keeping the metallic reflections of props authentic without over-smoothing the tabletop textures. At the same time, to clean up the dense wig shadows on my face, I performed extensive localized inpainting and selection retouching, which was an arduous process.
Echoing that quote in the post, "By my side shall be your resting place," Theresa's lore in Arknights is inherently rooted in a blend of cruelty and tenderness. During the shoot, my gaze didn't deliberately cater to the camera; instead, I tried to maintain a calm, serene look carrying a hint of compassionate gaze. The outfit styling adhered closely to this temperament—the black outer garment paired with silver chains added a distinctive visual focal point in the dim light.
Looking at this set of photos for a while brings a sense of inner tranquility. Although editing was exhausting, presenting this interplay of light and shadow made everything feel well worth it.
