The photos for Xishi's Poetic Jiangnan set are finally sorted out! Shooting this look happened to coincide with a rainy day; the weather forecast was completely off, and a drizzle started just as we arrived at the outdoor location. We originally thought the blue bricks and lush greenery of this classical Chinese garden would look pristine and luminous under clear skies, but the rain only grew heavier, leaving the blue flagstone paths soaked—yet unexpectedly delivering that damp, poetic Jiangnan atmosphere.
First, talking about the hair, makeup, and styling: the outfit is a modernized Chinese-style two-piece set in a cyan-and-white gradient, featuring a mandarin collar adorned with delicate silver frog closures, white lace cuffs with brown piping on the sleeves, and a long skirt printed with oversized white floral blossoms. To match the skin's setting, I prepped a light blue oil-paper umbrella and a notebook prop decorated with moon and star motifs. The hairstyle was arranged into twin braided pigtails accented with blue hair ties and silk ribbons. Managing a wig in the rain is genuinely troublesome; the moment synthetic fibers get wet, they tend to frizz up, requiring constant finger-combing to keep smooth. The makeup highlighted a blended pink-red wash around the eyes, paired with light amber colored contacts to project a soft, gentle demeanor.
Shooting outdoors was an absolute struggle. Standing in the rain holding an umbrella for extended takes left my arms completely sore, all while taking great care to keep rain and splashes from dirtying the skirt hem and shoes. Lighting proved to be the biggest hurdle: overcast, rainy light is very flat, making it difficult to capture the fabric's rich sheen on camera, which left the raw outdoor shots looking quite desaturated and grey. Post-processing was such a headache that I simply applied a general color grade without pixel-level retouching. Maintaining composed facial expressions in the gusting wind and rain was challenging as well, so I placed cartoon stickers over my face on some frames—please bear with me! Although the oil-paper umbrella looks gorgeous on camera, handling it against gusts was tough; several times it felt like the umbrella ribs were about to snap. Walking on slick flagstones in Mary Jane shoes required extreme caution, and getting a few mud splatters on the white stockings broke my heart.
The indoor studio session went much smoother. The lighting was stable, cleanly revealing details in both the makeup and garments. White stockings paired with black platform Mary Jane shoes created elongated proportions under the studio lights. The frames holding the notebook felt much more relaxed and natural without having to juggle an umbrella. The fabric is light and airy, draping with organic pleats as I moved, while the frog fasteners and lace trims looked exquisite on camera for this Stockings cosplay set.
As a cosplayer who frequently ventures outdoors, encountering rain is practically routine. From selecting outfits and styling wigs to applying makeup and scouting venues, every step demands dedication. Despite the outdoor flaws—even using AI assistance on a few shots where backgrounds were difficult to rescue—I remain thoroughly satisfied with the overall mood. This set may not be flawless, but it stands as an unforgettable shooting journey. A chance meeting by chance waters, destined yet fleeting—that wraps up this sharing.
