[Xishi cosplay] Honor of Kings: Dongfang Yao and Xishi's Mountain and Water Journey

The setting for this shoot was staged outdoors at a clear natural pool encircled by rolling mountains. To embody Xishi's airy, buoyant grace, the costume was tailored from diaphanous white-and-cyan gossamer fabrics; the gilded bird medallion on the chest and the translucent cyan dragon horn hairpieces were pinned and secured by hand piece by piece. The wig was treated for a sleek, silky finish to capture natural light flawlessly. In contrast, Dongfang Yao's Cloud Eagle armor boasts a rugged, structured palette of black, gold, and red. The metallic shoulder pauldrons and leather sword-belt required meticulous fitting, while the longsword with its ornate golden guard served as an essential sidearm prop.

The waterside swing and mirror-like reflections formed the centerpiece of the photoshoot. To capture the billowing skirts fluttering as the swing swayed in the breeze, we repeatedly adjusted our seated postures. Stepping barefoot along the shallow submerged rocks at the pool's edge was slippery, demanding rigorous core control to maintain balance while holding composed, serene facial expressions true to the character. Dongfang Yao pushing the swing from behind and reaching for my hand required seamless unspoken chemistry; several takes were halted when splashing water caught us right in the eyes. In sudden gusts of wind, the long, sheer sleeves easily snagged around the body, requiring assistants on standby to constantly reposition the drapery so the lens could freeze the most organic moments of flight.

Garment maintenance proved another time-intensive facet on location. Xishi's over-the-knee boots feature intricate cyan-and-gold embroidery, which picked up mud and water droplets along the shore, requiring thorough wiping down at every sequence change. To complement the frame's crystalline freshness, the boots were worn bare-legged, enhancing the crisp translucency of wading through the pool; the angle on the swing also highlighted the elongated leg lines and ornate boot craft.

Shooting from high noon until the sun sank behind the ridges, changing light and shadows sculpted rich layers across the landscape. Producing a complete cosplay set is truly a marriage of physical endurance and painstaking craft—from wardrobe care and pose direction to weathering outdoor wind, splashing water, and shifting light.
