When shooting this set of Honor of Kings Gongsun Li Flower Dance cosplay convention photos, the lighting at the venue was quite harsh. The overhead lights at the anime convention combined with the cluttered background posed quite a test for the photographer's metering and my makeup highlights. This look primarily features a cooling visual sensation, so I insisted on a blue-and-white gradient color scheme, paired with fluffy rabbit ears and some blue floral accessories, hoping to present the character's ethereal vibe.
Let's talk about how the outfit feels to wear first. First is this high-slit pleated miniskirt. For the lower body, the right leg wears a mismatched blue-and-white gradient over-the-knee sock. The single-leg over-the-knee design actually has a visual effect of elongating proportions. Moreover, combining this gradient feel with transparent chunky-heeled sandals makes the lines from the ankle to the calf look more slender. However, because the heel is not short and a one-legged standing pose is required to maintain balance, it actually takes a bit of core strength. For the pose in Photo 3 where I am raised on one leg while holding a giant blue flower prop, my legs were actually shaking violently during the shoot, and it all relied on the photographer's snapshot to stabilize it.
The details of the headpiece are a part I am relatively satisfied with myself. The white rabbit ears combined with two blue three-dimensional roses look simple, but hiding the hidden clips inside the hair took quite a bit of time. Then there is that iconic giant blue flower prop; the petal material combines translucent organza and satin, which feels exceptionally flowing in hand, but it has a massive area, so I had to be very careful not to hit people nearby when walking around the hall.
These four photos try out different composition concepts respectively. The kneeling and glancing-back shot in Photo 1 mainly aims to showcase the large blue ribbon on the back and the overall silhouette; sitting on the floor in Photo 2 while looking at the camera with the flower aligns better with most people's gentle impression of this character; the dynamic posing in Photo 3 is my favorite one this time, where the irregular leg lines paired with the hair fluttering in the wind showcase a lightweight, flying dynamic; Photo 4 utilizes a folding chair on-site to switch to a sitting pose, with the prop slightly resting by my leg, displaying a more relaxed and casual convention status.
The biggest difficulty of convention photos is background photobombing. Although the convention venue has white tables, chairs, and display racks, through the photographer's wide aperture blurring and selecting high-angle or low-angle shots, the cluttered elements were largely filtered out, leaving only the character's own blue and white tones.
The "Flower Dance" look tried this time has its overall visual focus scattered across various places—rabbit ears, blue flowers, and the giant petal prop are all competing for visual center. Therefore, to prevent the overall look from appearing bloated, I made the upper clothing into an asymmetric light gauze patchwork, ensuring coverage while remaining breathable, and the arm sleeves from the shoulder are treated to be quite thin, which gave me less restriction when performing various physical actions.
The physical stamina consumption at the convention was indeed immense. After shooting this set, a thin layer of sweat had already broken out on my back, but seeing the dreamlike feel captured in the final photos made the fatigue during the process fade away. Cosplay convention photos test on-site improvisation under limited conditions the most. This outfit has many accessories and massive props, so being able to shoot these sets of different compositions in an orderly manner was already a very smooth experience, serving as a memorable entry for my casual cosplay log through Anime-style photography.
