[Cai Wenji Wish of Time cosplay] Light and shadow records in the hydrangea flower sea of Chengdu Botanical Garden

I shot this set of Cai Wenji Wish of Time cosplay outdoor photos at the Chengdu Botanical Garden. The location chosen this time just happened to catch up with the newly created colorful hydrangea attraction in the botanical garden. The natural landscape matched the costume very well, so this shoot plan was finalized, making it a wonderful Chengdu photoshoot request opportunity.

The core of this styling is the iconic bright cyan short hair, paired with the mechanical-feeling grey-silver headwear on both sides of the top of the head. The costume itself is a yellow-and-green gradient Han-element long dress. The light blue totem embroidery craftsmanship on the chest is very delicate, the belt raises the waistline, and the layering of the hem along with the light fabric makes the entire outfit look very elegant when walking. Although it is a primarily Chinese-style cosplay outfit, adding sci-fi elements like the mechanical headwear gives the overall style a fresh and highly recognizable look under natural light.

To coordinate with the outdoor atmosphere, we used small wildflower bouquets and bubble-blowing toys as props. When blowing bubbles in the hydrangea bushes, the sunlight filtered through the transparent bubbles, refracting brilliant colors. Combined with the light skirt hem blown up by the gentle breeze, it added a lot of agile life to the frame. In the middle, we tried a camera position sitting on a log, which perfectly utilized the backlighting filtering through the gaps in the tree shade, producing a starburst-like halo effect. That soft light blended the figure and the background together beautifully.

The equipment used for this shoot was the Sony A7M4, paired with the Sigma 85/1.4 large aperture portrait lens and the Tamron 28-75 G2 zoom lens. The 85mm prime lens performed exceptionally well in capturing half-body close-ups, background blur, and facial details. For the direct-out processing, the Sony Creative Look FL parameter was used. The in-camera settings were Highlights -9, Shadows +3, Contrast -2, Sharpness 1, and Sharpness Range 3, along with a fine adjustment of Clarity 1. The resulting frame colors were relatively light and soft, heavily matching this natural and fresh style of outdoor photography. With just a little color grading, photos can be outputted, which is highly efficient. This showcases the true charm of Anime-style photography.

During the shoot, we encountered many tourists out for a spring stroll in the botanical garden, and a few even recognized this look and greeted us friendly. The advantage of shooting outdoors in the botanical garden is the rich variety of scenes—possessing large fields of hydrangeas, tall trees, dirt paths, and logs, allowing for compositions with different layers. The changes in light also posed some challenges for the shoot. Especially when taking backlit photos, the advantage of the Sigma 85/1.4 large aperture was very obvious, balancing the transparency of the frame with the brightness of the figure.

Overall, this outdoor shoot was a very comfortable experience. The weather was clear, the sunlight was abundant, and the flower sea in the venue had just entered its peak bloom phase. The yellow and cyan colors of the costume did not clash at all under the backdrop of green plants and flowers. The bubble machine and the bouquet also made the figure's performance come alive. For people who like Chinese elements and want to shoot a refreshing outdoor scene in summer, the botanical garden is indeed a treasure location. Especially combined with the parameter settings of Sony's Creative Look this time, both the efficiency and quality of the photos are highly satisfying.
