The magical girl on the merry-go-round is my concrete expression as a cosplayer of the character Madoka Kaname and the imagery of "cycles." The location for this shoot was selected at an amusement park surrounded by trees, encircled by lush, tall pines and cypresses, with light and shadow interwoven and appearing exceptionally quiet against the backdrop of the azure sky. We specially sought out this pure white merry-go-round, its ceiling adorned with intricate European-style reliefs carving the symmetrical letters "ADIRE," which, combined with the surrounding pure white horse sculptures and metal pillars, creates a unique atmosphere that is both holy and slightly lonely.
In terms of hair and makeup, this time I chose Madoka Kaname's most recognizable pink twintails wig. To fit the character, the hair strands were given a gentle, slight curl treatment and paired with that classic pink-and-white magical girl combat skirt. The skirt's material utilizes a polyester blend with excellent drape, presenting a subtle sheen under different angles of light. The red-and-white striped thigh-high socks serve as local embellishments, perfectly balancing the monotony of the large white area. For the makeup part, I specially selected a warm-toned pink-orange eyeshadow palette, focusing on outlining the curvature of the eyeliner to try to maintain a sense of girlhood while increasing that profound depth and determination in the gaze.
I have always believed that the merry-go-round is the most suitable physical entity to carry the concept of "cycles" in reality. Just as pointed out by the post's title "The Looping Circle and the Non-Looping Fate," it always turns round and round in the exact same spot, yet can never sail toward a true distance. This inescapable sense of destiny highly coincides with the setting of Madoka Kaname struggling and reincarnating in countless timelines, wishing to break the cruel, pre-established fate. Standing on this merry-go-round, it feels as if one can personally feel the heavy weight of every restart the character goes through, as well as the absolute resolve to defy heaven to protect her loved ones. This kind of immersion is hard for conventional studio shoots to compare with.
The natural light on the day of the shoot was excellent, and that highly saturated blue sky became the most striking backdrop for the entire set of visuals. The photographer @三月的半 is especially talented at this kind of clean visual expression with a touch of literary and artistic temperament. During composition, we intentionally used the white merry-go-round dome as the upper frame of the image, with the cosplayer sitting at the exact center of the merry-go-round disk, which both highlights the geometric visual of the "circle" and allows the eyesight to naturally drop onto my costume and expression. A white environment has high requirements for reflection; we adjusted the camera positions and metering modes multiple times during the shoot to avoid overall overexposure losing details. Fortunately, the raw negatives obtained in the end were very clean, and after only minor adjustments to the color balance in post-processing, it presented that cool yet gentle sense of imagery in my heart.
Actually, this official photo set was repeatedly discussed quite a few times from conception to landing. Because it wasn't just a display of a set of clothing, I paid more attention to the fusion of character temperament and the environment's atmosphere. The loneliness of being surrounded by natural green plants intertwined and collided with the childish fantasy inherent to the merry-go-round itself, forming complex and diverse emotional layers. During the shoot, we had to overcome the cluttered light brought by the grass and tree shadows while trying our best to maintain a composed and mysterious expression, passing on the character's inner monologue through the visible visual.
In the post-processing phase, we intentionally abandoned heavy filters and cluttered special effects to retain that pure quality. The focus lay in balancing the relationship among blue, white, and pink, making the white within the gray tones look much softer. I specially lowered the saturation of green slightly, thereby making the red and pink garments look more vivid. The overall final images look more like a story frozen in time, quietly outlining that tiny sliver of hope, close to a faint glimmer, of the character amidst endless cycles on the stationary disk.
Over the past few years of doing cosplay, I have interpreted quite a few characters, but for a character like Madoka Kaname who possesses profound fateful colorings, every re-interpretation digs out a different emotion. Standing on this rotating disk and quietly feeling the emotions behind it is the greatest meaning of this work as a Cosplayer Sharing piece of outdoor photography. I hope this serenity under the daylight can touch you who see the photos.
