Today, I'm sharing a Custom design cosplay of Yao from Honor of Kings. Bringing this costume from concept to completion took nearly two months. I wanted to break away from her traditional in-game tribal aesthetic and untamed nature vibe, so for this custom concept, I opted for an intricately tailored, Pink-themed cosplay dress. The palette blends soft pink with creamy ivory, adorned with generous lace, ruffles, and pearl accents, striving to preserve Yao's signature nimbleness while adding the sugary charm of a magical girl.
For the hair, I selected long pink locks woven into two thick braided pigtails. To match the wardrobe, the hair accessories featured delicate white blossoms and butterflies. The centerpiece of the head styling was the headpiece: I preserved Yao's iconic deer antlers but gave them a plush pink finish, paired with oversized pink Kemonomimi cosplay ears to make the head silhouette look full and lush. The purple contact lenses served as the crowning touch, lending her gaze an enchanting, deep, and lively sparkle.
The props were also custom-crafted. The white wand was wrapped in soft plush fabric, crowned with angel wings, stars, and clear crystals. The wings on my back were fashioned from white faux fur, which exhibited beautiful, tactile depth under the sunlight rather than looking flat.
The shoot was hosted in a rose garden, where lush green leaves and pink blooms mirrored the colors of my costume. The lighting was gentle that day, so instead of exaggerated dynamic posing, I relied on eye contact and subtle wand-handling gestures to express the character. Tilting my head slightly and leaning forward with one hand resting on the wand and the other hanging relaxed created a lively, natural frame.
As a cosplayer, the greatest joy of custom design cosplay is infusing personal creativity into a character. Rather than strictly replicating canon models or key art, it's about deconstructing and reimagining their core spirit. Yao's identity centers on the deer spirit and protective devotion; this dress and white wings were created to evoke that exact warmth.
Shooting outdoors in this attire was quite an endurance test: the voluminous skirt made moving through flower beds tricky, and plush accessories soaked up heat under the sun. Yet seeing the final frames made every bit worthwhile. I'm thrilled with the outcome; the color coordination and environmental harmony aligned seamlessly.
For makeup, complementing the pink wardrobe, I used a pink-brown eyeshadow base layered with fine glitter. Blush was swept beneath the eyes to create an innocent, endearing look, topped with dewy high-shine lip glaze for a light, translucent finish. Under outdoor daylight, this makeup never felt heavy, blending effortlessly into the scenery.
During the shoot, I imagined myself as an elf living inside the garden, casting gentle spells with the wand in hand. This custom look felt like an entire standalone universe. We explored various compositions, and this frame achieved my favorite balance between subject and floral environment.
Every custom cosplay project is a brand-new adventure. From fabric hunting and sketching to coordinating with tailors and hand-sewing intricate accessories, the process was meticulous yet endlessly fun. I cherish creating from scratch. This custom styling fulfilled my magical girl dreams while deepening my appreciation for the character.
