[Yaoyao Cosplay] The Herb-Gathering Maiden of Genshin Impact: Night Forest Shoot Experience

Preparing this herb-gathering theme for Yaoyao in Genshin Impact took quite a while. In the past, we usually picked quiet spots around the city, but this time we headed further out into the suburbs to an Outdoor location filled with overgrown grass and wild blossoms. Before setting out, my biggest concern was insufficient light, as the forest canopy gets pitch black once the afternoon sun sets. Looking at the final shots, photographer @XiaoXiexin handled lighting masterfully, transforming a dark grassy clearing into a translucent, 3D space for this Cosplay photography set.

For styling, I deliberately emphasized character cute agility. The twin hair buns were divided specifically for her, adorned with star clips on the sides for a spirited touch. The grass-green vest paired with white lantern sleeves stood out prominently in these deep woods. Yet behind the scenes, securing the golden spherical ornaments took immense effort—several pins were required to keep the wig firmly in place without looking floaty.

Though daylight was dim, it gave us ample room for fill flash. While images look dreamy, dense weeds submerged my lower body whenever I stepped deeper into the grass. Finding angles left us drenched in sweat, with the photographer crouching on the ground for ideal perspectives. Despite bug spray, exposed legs and arms caught several mosquito bites. After two to three grueling hours, capturing such vibrant moments made every effort worth it for our Anime performance.

As for props, the yellow rabbit plushie was the ultimate crowning touch, preventing static poses. Holding it overhead, cradling it in my arms, or placing it beside a tree immediately brought the character to life. Photo 7 sitting quietly by the tree trunk is my absolute favorite, perfectly embodying that relaxed yet proud herb-gathering maiden vibe.

The second set took place on the open grass. Holding a freshly picked bouquet of white wildflowers, the kneeling pose looking at the lens in photo 9 took three or four attempts—balancing a steady kneel without sinking into weeds while revealing leg contours. Paired with white knee-high boots and orange-spliced soles, top and bottom color tones harmonized beautifully, offering easy mobility amidst rustling winds.

I am thoroughly satisfied with the flash lighting. The photographer paid special attention to depth against dark night backdrops, isolating the subject sharply without dimming facial tones. Balancing aperture, shutter speed, and flash units requires great expertise; seeing that subject-background separation on screen completely amazed me.

In post-processing, color grading leaned toward natural, vibrant translucency. We avoided heavy beautification, preserving authentic skin texture to reflect her natural affinity. Controlling bright color balance let her vibrant orange hair pop out strikingly against lush green backdrops without feeling jarring.

That wraps up the entire journey of this Yaoyao cosplay shoot. Despite tough conditions and relentless mosquitoes in the brush, the moment the shutter captured those energetic seconds made everything feel worthwhile. Outing shoots are often a battle of endurance, but bringing a beloved character authentically into real-world nature is a deeply romantic endeavor.
