This time I did the black feather styling for Yuzuriha Inori from Guilty Crown, which fulfills a long-held wish of mine. Although it has been years since the anime aired, whenever I hear the soundtrack, I am always deeply moved by its unique, ethereal vibe. That's why, here in 2025, I still chose to shoot this set of photos.
Let's talk about the costume first. The core element of this black feather styling is the large area of black feathers combined with semi-transparent tulle patchwork. When I first got the outfit, it felt lighter than expected, but the fluffiness of the feathers was excellent. During the shoot, the most critical thing to watch out for was the shape of the feathers; any slight pressure or curling would ruin the original sense of fragility. To achieve a lightweight effect, the skirt's lower half features asymmetrical cuts and tulle, which flows beautifully with movement. However, because it combines real feathers and tulle, moving around the set was actually a bit difficult, especially being barefoot on the set—I had to be careful not to trip over the props or flower petals.
The hair and makeup were also key elements of this shoot. The long pink hair paired with the red ribbons at the ends is highly recognizable. Since it's a black feather theme, I deliberately lowered the makeup's color saturation, making the base makeup more translucent and matte. I focused the visual emphasis on the eye makeup, using red eyeshadow and matching colored contact lenses to echo the character's red eyes, hoping to present a gaze that is both ethereal and carries a hint of danger. To match the overall cold atmosphere, I also made my skin tone appear fairer.
The creation of the dreamy scene for this shoot was also meticulously done this time. A large area of light purple fabric served as the backdrop, surrounded by pinkish-purple flowers, creating a sharp color contrast with the red rose petals. On the left side of the frame, a classical white Roman column and a white dove sculpture on top added a sense of spatial depth and sacredness to the otherwise flat background. The layout of the entire venue revolved around the main colors of black, white, purple, and red, which are highly representative visual languages for the character of Yuzuriha Inori.
My favorite composition in this set is actually the first high-angle overhead shot. Lying flat is a true test of body line control; you have to find a relaxed yet controlled posture amidst the pile of feathers. The chaotic beauty of the black feathers, the scattered feel of the rose petals, combined with the overhead camera perspective, completely maxed out this classic sense of fragile beauty. With all kinds of props and flowers around, it's actually hard for a coser to quickly arrange a perfect pose, requiring me to find the most comfortable footing among the gaps of petals and feathers. Thanks to the photographer's patient snapshots for capturing the most natural moments.
Sorting through these photos brought back memories of the whole process from preparation to the actual shoot. It can be considered a satisfying milestone achieved for myself in 2025. I hope to maintain this passion in the future and keep trying and challenging different styles and looks.
