Changing into the blue and white Maid outfit and carefully tidying up the white ruffled headband on my head, today I am Shiki Natsume in Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterfly. Although Shiki Natsume herself might carry a bit of a lazy "not wanting to work" temperament, since I've taken on the responsibilities of a maid, I must wear this attire to bring out her narrative. I am Xingxingzi, and today I will take everyone into an immersive experience of Sister Natsume's state in this set of photos.
The sense of layering in the clothing is a detail I really like. The deep blue long-sleeved top is paired with a large white ruffled apron, and the white stripes at the cuffs bring a refreshing visual effect. The conspicuous yellow and white striped bow in front of the collar is the highlight of the entire costume; paired with that green gemstone brooch, it not only brightens the colors of the upper body but also makes the character's recognizability very high. The white skirt hem at the bottom features an exquisite deep blue piping, separating the layers clearly. Of course, as one of the souls of a Maid outfit, the white over-knee stockings and the transparent anti-slip bands on the legs are indispensable; they visually elongate the overall lines and make this costume possess both the sweetness of an Anime maid and real-world wearability in daily life.
For the makeup, I specially adjusted the facial proportions; the black straight bangs and the long hair hanging on both sides, combined with the slightly downturned eyeliner at the outer corners of the eyes, reproduce Shiki Natsume's gentle yet slightly playful expression. Under the eyes, I did a faint smudge with light pink to increase the softness of the facial contours, while the vivid red lips became the visual anchor of the entire makeup, forming a color echo with the yellow bow on the clothes. During the shoot, the lighting designer selected a very soft, warm light source; we let the light project onto the face to eliminate redundant sharp shadows, making the skin texture look clear, while the three-dimensional feel of the ruffles at the costume joints can also be seen.
This set of photos was completed in an indoor setting full of life. The dark brown leather sofa served as the best interactive prop, and the wooden shelf and ornaments behind it were blurred by a large aperture, scattering to create a warm yellow atmosphere beautifully. During the shoot, I imagined myself sitting in a corner of the café, without too much business pressure, simply enjoying my own quiet afternoon moment.
In terms of grasping the movements, instead of deliberately posing in rigid standing postures, I leaned more towards a relaxed feel. For instance, kneeling on the sofa while gently lifting the skirt hem, or very casually turning my body to rest my chin in my hand and looking at the lens, or even letting my legs naturally cross when sitting straight, revealing the leg lines wrapped in white stockings. Every time like this, it can not only best display the clothing's cut but also pull the contrast between the white stockings and the dark sofa to its maximum. These seemingly accidental movements happen to fit Shiki Natsume's character core of "although she will complain verbally, she will still get the job done well." Dressing up the Maid outfit with the intimacy of a girl next door was also a tiny goal for this styling.
The shoot lasted for two or three hours. The color of this costume under the lights would change with the angle, from deep blue to bright blue, and the white ruffles would also present different textures. Although wearing it for a long time and repeatedly posing indeed consumes physical strength, as a professional coser, being able to materialize the character's personality in front of the lens through expressions and body language is what I always pursue.
There isn't excessive post-production retouching for these photos this time. The frame retains the most original sense of atmosphere from the shoot—the texture of the dark leather sofa, the diffuse reflection of the white stockings, and the textured sheen of the colored bow. Every frozen frame is like a real daily slice of life, allowing the Anime maid character to have a vivid landing in a real space through Cosplay photography.
