Preparing and shooting this banquet look for Lumine took considerable thought and effort, and today I'd like to dive into the details behind this photo set. Portraying the Traveler from Genshin Impact, my goal was to faithfully translate that 2D anime grandeur into a tangible 3D reality. Starting with the attire: this beige strapless evening dress was custom-made, crafted from satin with a subtle sheen. Combined with tiered pleats and ruffled tiers, it boasts a gorgeous drape whether walking or striking a pose. The gold piping on the bodice and the blue gem embellishment serve as the crowning touches; to keep the palette balanced, black satin ribbons were intentionally added along the waist and back, preserving the gravitas of a formal gala while keeping the character's lively grace intact.
The wig and makeup were definitely tests of technique. The long, straight golden wig needed thorough pre-styling, particularly the direction of the signature ahoge on top and the bangs, ensuring the fibers wouldn't look unnatural under bright studio flashes. For makeup, aiming for an authentic anime finish, I kept the base clean and radiant. The eye makeup elongated the eyeliner and utilized false lashes to open up the eyes, paired with a highly saturated classic red lip to create a striking focal point against the dark background.
While this was a studio shoot, the elaborate custom set truly elevated the atmosphere. The massive vintage gold-carved frame was the centerpiece of the scene, draped with sheer silver-gray tulle and cascading pearl necklaces to add rich dimensionality. Against a pure black backdrop, the floor was covered in artificial red rose petals, complemented by dramatic, oversized red faux flowers to deliver an intense red, black, and gold color clash. Under such high-saturation contrast, lighting required particular care on the face and dress to avoid having skin tones washed out or tinted by the ambient red reflections. I had the photographer position softboxes both in front and at the side to guarantee that skin textures and the fine details of the gown's ruffles were cleanly captured.
Regarding posing and composition, we tested several concepts. In the floor-seated pose shown in photo one, I pointed my toes forward to elongate leg lines while using the skirt's volume to flatter my silhouette. The standing pose with one leg lifted in photo two is a personal favorite—it beautifully accentuates the high-low hemline, and the subtle three-quarter angle flatters bodily curves, pairing with silver glitter heels to enhance perceived height. The composition in photo three, sitting inside the frame, leans heavily into mood—hands folded naturally with eyes glancing away from the camera to convey the quiet mystique of a grand banquet. When capturing such ornate sets, close coordination with the photographer and utilizing the frame and blooms as foreground elements create fantastic spatial depth. I hope these insights offer some helpful inspiration to fellow cosplay enthusiasts!
