[Shiranui cosplay] Onmyoji Glorious Flutter: The Crimson Butterfly Dance Reborn from Fire

This cosplay shoot for Shiranui's Glorious Flutter from Onmyoji took nearly a month from initial preparation to final edits. The overarching keynote was set to opulent and aloof; to align with the concept of a caged bird breaking free to sing, the set design featured expansive crimson drapery and a traditional Japanese interior with wooden sliding doors.

The wardrobe was remarkably heavy with artisanal craftsmanship. The outer crimson cross-collar robe was emblazoned with golden motifs of soaring birds and leaping flames, delivering intense visual impact. To enhance the fabric's flowing drape, a tier of sheer white tulle was added beneath as an undergarment. The obi sash was slate-blue, adorned with azure butterfly embroidery and red knotted cord tassels, boasting extraordinary detail. Securing these complex ornaments required numerous snaps and pins during dressing, and once fully donned, the ensemble carried substantial weight.

The head styling stood as the prime focus of the hair and makeup. The wig had to be styled into a grand, sculpted high updo, crowned with a golden flame-shaped headdress. The tassel hairpins cascading from either side were strung with metallic chains and crimson beads, clinking crisply with every movement. In terms of makeup, beyond the eyes, a red huadian floral mark was hand-painted on the forehead and a delicate beauty mark was placed beneath the outer corner of the eye, striving to capture that seductive, bewitching aura touched with poignant fragility.

Props played a massive role during the shoot. The colossal golden feather fan and the red plum blossom folding fan were essential tools for atmospheric storytelling; together with the white porcelain sake carafe and cups on the low wooden square table, they effortlessly facilitated seated, fan-holding, and cup-raising stances. To simulate the mood of nightfall awaiting whispered melodies, wooden paper lanterns served as primary lighting sources—warm amber light diffusing through the paper shades cast upon the crimson backdrop with striking textural depth.

Regarding emotional nuance, I intentionally minimized dramatic movements, relying instead on focused gazes and micro-expressions to convey her languid yet guarded nature. Looking sideways while adjusting hairpins or tilting my gaze slightly upward when raising the sake cup were choices designed to project the pride ingrained in her very soul. To capture the flutter of butterflies, we harmonized on-set artificial butterfly props with digital VFX, lending dynamic vitality to the frame.

Though wearing such an intricate, weighty ensemble and continually resetting postures was exhausting, seeing the final images radiate an opulent yet faintly melancholic beauty made every bit of hard work profoundly worthwhile.
