The overall concept of this studio shoot revolved around the word 'leisure.' To present that relaxed and cozy atmosphere, we put a lot of thought into the set design. A black background coupled with a huge glowing full moon instantly maxed out that tranquil nighttime feel. To add an ethereal vibe, a dry ice machine was specially used to create smoke, paired with pink and white flower branches, giving the overall picture a great sense of layering.
Let's talk about the costume and makeup first. The deep blue gradient long wig, paired with gold hollowed-out hair accessories and pom-poms, is visually very recognizable. The outfit is white with blue borders, featuring many auspicious cloud and water ripple patterns, possessing both the dignity of traditional Chinese style and, being a short-skirt design, appearing lightweight and lively. The eye makeup deliberately used a reddish color palette, combined with colored contacts, hoping to capture the character's unique charm.
During the shoot, to fit the theme of 'leisure,' I tried many relaxed poses. For example, sitting by a wooden table holding a pipa, paying attention to the extension of the leg lines, with both legs hanging down naturally, one in front of the other, toes touching the ground, which makes them look more slender on camera. As for the gaze, it could be slightly lazy; instead of staring straight into the lens, looking to the side or downward adds a stronger sense of story.
Props were the main highlight of this shoot. Strawberries, grapes, an exquisite tea pastry picnic box, and that fluffy little white rabbit—combining these elements together is the absolute definition of afternoon tea time. Holding a bunch of grapes or pinching a strawberry without overly deliberate movements, just naturally preparing to eat or playing with them in hand, results in very vivid captured moments by the photographer. For instance, in the shot lying sideways on the floor, propping myself up with one hand and holding a strawberry in the other, paired with the smoke on the ground, it felt like stealing half a day of leisure in a fairyland.
Since it was shot in a traditional-style studio with great wooden floor textures, I went barefoot. The branch-shaped small mark on the side of my foot in the third photo was also revealed, adding a bit of detail. The round fan and glowing orb on the daybed were also great interactive props, which could be held in hand or placed casually by the side.
The entire shooting process was actually quite relaxing; the lighting in the studio was very soft, and with the rich props, just casually posing made for a great picture. The traditional-style studio sets here in Guangzhou are truly mature, allowing us to achieve the desired effect without needing an outdoor location. I am quite satisfied with these photos myself; the coordination of light and shadow and props completely set off that leisurely atmosphere under the moon.
