[Luo Tianyi cosplay] Chinese-Style Reverie by the Garden Waterside

I finally had the chance to shoot this Luo Tianyi look in an authentic classical garden.

Let's start with the hair and makeup. The wig is silver-gray; sculpting the natural wispy flyaways and the coiled hair bun at the crown took nearly an hour of careful styling alone. The hair accessories are quite intricate: a gilded crescent-shaped headpiece paired with pink floral blooms and cascading long tassels, flanked by grayish-black looped hair buns that required constant readjusting with any large movement. The makeup focused heavily on the eyes and complexion: vibrant emerald-green contact lenses combined with an expansive sweep of pink eyeshadow and blush, finished with a classic crimson lipstick. I spent a long time fine-tuning it before the mirror to strike that exact balance between radiant vibrancy and sheer clarity. The costume features a paneled top in blue, white, and black, adorned with white lace scallops and golden circular rings across the collar and chest. The sleeves are sheer tulle puff sleeves blending purple, blue, and pink gradients detailed with butterfly accents at the cuffs, paired below with a gradient pink pleated skirt. The look was styled with lace-trimmed White over-the-knee socks and a semi-translucent floral round fan.

The shooting location was a Jiangnan-style water town garden, enclosed by wooden pavilions, vermilion pillars, shimmering rippling waters, and a backdrop of weeping willows against traditional yellow walls and dark-tiled eaves. The overcast sky provided soft, diffused light without harsh glaring hot spots—ideal shooting conditions for the garment's complex gradient shades and sheer fabrics. Standing in the covered promenade, leaning against timber railings, or resting on a wooden bench, it was effortless to immerse oneself in that timeless classical serenity.

In choreographing the poses, I strove to evoke the poetic sentiment described as 'stepping once into a painted scroll, dreaming back across a thousand years.' For example, slightly raising a hand beside the brow in the first image, gesturing toward distant vistas in the second, and turning sideways to gaze at the water's reflection in the fourth. My personal favorite, however, is the seated pose in Image 3. Perched on the wooden bench with legs crossed, the gradient pink pleated skirt draped naturally, cleanly showcasing the White over-the-knee socks and the elongated lines of the legs, keeping the visual anchor remarkably grounded. It simultaneously highlighted the garment's distinctive tailoring and accentuated leg proportions.

Truthfully, shooting outdoors in this ensemble was far from easy. The multi-layered tulle trapped heat in humid air, and the headpiece needed constant pin reinforcement. Yet seeing the raw previews through the viewfinder made every effort worthwhile. The photographer's mastery over natural light and composition preserved the expansive openness of the garden while crisply isolating intricate character details. Post-processing only required gentle color adjustments to let the fabric's rich blue, purple, and pink gradient sheen shine through. Every cosplay is a process of building a character from scratch; from prepping wardrobe props to blocking on location, the entire journey is a pure joy.
