This shoot took place in an empty art classroom, bringing along some volleyballs and a metal ball cage as props to present a casual yet playful look. Having used the Ricoh GR series for street photography many times before, I specially switched to the negative film mode this time to shoot an indoor portrait, and the color outcome turned out just right—highlights have a subtle warmth, dark areas carry a tiny bit of cyan-gray, and the overall contrast is low, which instead makes the skin tone and the pink-blue gradient of the wig look much softer.

For clothing, I chose a classic black and white maid dress, paired with a twin-tail wig and matching hair accessories. Visually, it retains the character's recognition without stealing the focus due to overly loud colors. The combination of white stockings and black Mary Jane shoes creates an excellent deep-to-light contrast in the frame, especially the composition sitting on the bench with legs stretched straight, allowing the leg lines to extend naturally. Coordinated with the soft tones of the negative film mode, the texture feels incredibly comfortable.

During the shoot, natural light was primarily used. The window was on the right side of the frame; the light wasn't particularly harsh, but it was enough to strike beautiful catchlights in the eyes. The autofocus speed of the Ricoh GR IV was perfectly sufficient indoors. I captured a few shots sitting inside the ball cage. Although surrounded by stainless steel pipes and volleyballs, relying on the camera's wide-angle close-up perspective, the frame instead gained a cozy sense of envelopment. To prevent the background desks, chairs, and blackboard from looking too cluttered, I intentionally moved the easels and triangles into the visual blind spots, keeping only a small amount of yellow wooden elements as accents.

The most exhausting part of the process was actually interacting with that iron cage ball basket. The volleyballs themselves are very light, but the metal pipes reflect light easily, requiring us to avoid strong mirror reflections while keeping the posture natural. So the actions of squatting inside or leaning on top were adjusted angle by angle. I really like the final selected shots, especially the one holding a pink volleyball and looking back at the camera, which has a small accidental daily feel of a classroom.

This time, I didn't intentionally force large-scale scenes; instead, I maintained a relatively relaxed mood. Borrowing the low-saturation expression of the Ricoh negative film simulation, I combined the maid elements with the campus environment. Honestly, shooting slowly in such a bright and quiet space is much easier than filling a studio with lights, and the resulting photos are more vivid. Looking back, I feel this set of works preserves the styling completeness that cosplay should have while carrying a bit of the relaxation of a life snapshot, making it perfect for sharing indoor portrait photography ideas on Xiaohongshu or Weibo.

I also noticed that the black and white maid outfit, when paired with this pink-and-blue wig, achieves a subtle cool-color balance under warm light. Especially the transition of the white stockings in the dark shadows—the Ricoh negative film mode barely lost any details, and post-processing basically only involved minor cropping and brightening. When shooting similar styles of indoor cosplay in the future, I think this in-camera filter can definitely be used as the primary solution. Next time, if I shoot again, perhaps switching to a tighter space and using bookshelves and teaching aids as the foreground will create even more layers in Anime-style photography.
