[Genshin Impact] Mualani Cosplay: A Guide Between Sea Breezes and Waves

Shooting this Mualani set on the beach at Beishan Bay in Shantou was truly a rewarding outdoor experience. The coastal environment of Beishan Bay fits the character's casual beach vacation setting very well. The dark brown reefs as the foreground, with the open sea and the faint distant city skyline behind, form an outdoor location with rich visual depth. The weather on the day of the shoot was cloudy with very soft lighting and a natural light blue sky. This diffuse light was extremely forgiving for rendering the blue and white geometric color blocks on the character's costume without any harshness from overexposure.

The outfit for this cosplay takes a refreshing and vibrant route overall, but because there are many head accessories and protective gear, it required frequent adjustments during the shoot by the sea. To recreate the lively and cheerful personality of the People of the Springs guide, every detail—from the direction of the wig's bangs to the gold neck ornament and the tightness of the wristbands—had to be repeatedly confirmed in the strong coastal wind. The wind on shooting day was indeed quite strong, and sometimes we had to try turning around and tilting my head multiple times just to wait for a moment where my hair wasn't blown into a mess. For hand props, the blue-and-white fluffy ball hanging ornament and the two blue short batons felt very comfortable in hand, noticeably enhancing the dynamic feel of the frame during large movements and blending wonderfully with the character's look.

The photographer this time was CN Yuhua (Xiaopang) teacher, who is very experienced in shooting Cosplay photography with an outdoor athletic feel and excels at capturing real natural moments. For instance, the photos where I'm wearing sunglasses were actually very casual actions in the sea breeze; he pressed the shutter immediately as I adjusted the sunglasses, creating an unexpectedly strong vacation vibe and cool aura. During framing, he guided me to adjust my center of gravity based on the height of the reefs—leaning slightly forward or turning my hips—making my body lines look more extended in front of the lens. Especially for the poses sitting on the reefs with one leg bent or dangling naturally, these postures not only showcased the outfit's layering perfectly, but also highlighted the overall summer cool feel.

For this swimsuit-style cosplay outdoors, the biggest challenge was actually the environment itself. The surface of coastal reefs is very slick from seawater, and wearing platform sandals and leg guards while climbing up and down rocks to keep balance was a technical skill. Seawater and wet sand occasionally splashed onto the skirt hem, but this actually added a touch of authentic outdoor shoot marks to the images. When the sea breeze blew my bangs too wild, we would pause to fix them with hairspray before continuing, ensuring a flawless final outcome.

I personally love the color grading of this photo set. Post-processing didn't alter the sea color excessively, keeping its original deep blue tones while highlighting my skin texture and the geometric costume details through light-and-shadow contrast. The impression Mualani gives was originally that of a sunny, vibrant, energetic girl, so in front of the lens, I mostly chose relaxed and natural micro-expressions, even intentionally showing a bit of playful charm. Combining the character's traits with Shantou photography local environments made me feel this cosplay was not just a photoshoot, but an in-character experience by the coast. The seascape at Beishan Bay in Shantou provided a fantastic atmosphere, where the distant city buildings in the sea mist and the waves right before my eyes made the 2D character stepping into reality look even more vivid—which is probably the unique charm of outdoor Cosplay photography.
