For this shoot of Mei and Yuzu from Citrus, we primarily selected an outdoor location featuring stone steps and lush trees. The elevation changes across the site were ideal for showcasing that subtle tension between the two within a campus setting.
To faithfully capture their student essence, garment details had to be dialed in meticulously. Mei's dark vest paired with a pleated plaid skirt, alongside the collar bow and shoe textures, required careful fine-tuning. Yuzu's pink shirt and the white cardigan tied around her waist created a vibrant chromatic contrast. Because the school uniform styling is relatively classic, the black over-the-knee stockings served as a vital accent to the look. The proportion of exposed skin between the stockings and the skirt hem required repeated calibration through squatting and leg lifts to ensure smooth, natural leg lines before the camera. Paired with polished leather loafers, the full textural quality shone through.
Sunlight was abundant on the day of the shoot, so we scheduled our session for the late afternoon when the angled rays hit the steps and foliage to create rich layers of light and shadow. We incorporated over-the-shoulder camera angles; with the two situated at different step elevations, combined with foreground bokeh, the viewer's gaze naturally wanders between them. Mei stood gracefully on the higher landing holding a textbook with her characteristic cool composure, while Yuzu struck a bold, expressive pose with one hand on her hip and the other pointing skyward. Freezing this interplay of stillness and kinetic motion demanded moving up and down the staircase repeatedly to adjust wig contours and keep framing fluid.
The prop book was a wonderful storytelling anchor throughout. Mei's grip on the volume needed to stay natural rather than stiff, with her eyes connecting organically to either the text or the path ahead. Yuzu's movements were much more dynamic; to prevent broad gestures from shifting her outfit or displacing the wig, we paused to reset our styling and attire after each sequence. Beyond individual close-ups, duo framing required strict precision: the horizontal lines of the stairs served as visual baselines, ensuring our positions did not clash while our postures mirrored each other in a kinetic-and-still dynamic.
To lock in that sweet spot where foreground blur and sharp background focus flattered both full-body silhouettes and leg lines, we repositioned the camera countless times. Although portraying two distinct personalities, the final imagery speaks volumes through interwoven gazes and understated body language. No exaggerated melodrama was needed—simply standing in place and letting the school uniform, textbooks, and stone staircase converse was enough to evoke that bittersweet campus aesthetic. We hope this photo set conveys our heartfelt interpretation of these two characters.
