This time I decided to challenge the Hatsune Miku look from PJSK Project Sekai's 2.5 Anniversary, and a lot of thought went into it from the overall planning to the final output. Although some time has passed since the 2.5 Anniversary, when I actually held this design draft, the impulse to materialize it was still very strong. As a cosplayer who is constantly active in Anime-style photography studios, I have always had a very deep affection for the character Hatsune Miku. Being able to present her this time with a slightly retro and commemorative theme makes it feel exceptionally meaningful to me.
Speaking of this styling, the core elements are still the teal twintails wig and the full white academy-style suit uniform. Many people might think that Hatsune Miku's makeup and styling are simple, but actually grasping that just-right agile and lively feeling is very difficult. This time, I chose a clear, natural, and brightly colored style for my makeup, with blue contact lenses echoing the wig color, while controlling the intensity of the eye makeup to avoid letting the makeup overshadow the character's own temperament.
For the costume, the white suit jacket paired with the light blue pleated skirt and the delicate black bow tie perfectly replicates the crispness and youthfulness of the original setup. When choosing the wig, we specially picked a style with good hair luster and moderate fluffiness. Through careful styling, the arc of the high twintails presents the most natural state, paired with small bows between the hair strands, full of details.
It was a great honor this time to cooperate with the photographer teacher @MeijijiangIsAPhotographer. The photographer is highly experienced, and based on the colors of our costume, ultimately settled on an indoor setting dominated by warm gold and cream-white tones. The European vintage chairs, crystal chandeliers, and a large number of white roses and plant backdrops on set laid a romantic and elegant foundation for the entire set of photos. The teacher was excellent at guiding movements; during the shoot, we were not just showcasing the character's exterior, but also conveying the warm and somewhat nostalgic emotional atmosphere of the 2.5 Anniversary through body language. To restore that warm feeling, the photographer specially prepared soft warm lights, casting a very gentle rim light on the character. While capturing movements, I subconsciously cradled that bouquet of white roses; that quiet posture of holding flowers, combined with the vintage indoor layout, carried a strong sense of a final look.
After the photos came out, while thinking about how to present them, I reached out to the layout design teacher @mahiro. As everyone knows, many current cosplayer photoshoots are not just the credit of the photography; the post-processing layout is also the crowning touch. The layout teacher brought my personal aesthetic preferences into full play, utilizing a large number of graphic design elements that simulate film negatives, vinyl records, camera UI interfaces, as well as musical staves and notes. These retro music and film-themed layouts precisely echo Hatsune Miku's identity as a virtual singer, making the entire piece more narrative, just like a memoir hidden inside an old music album. At first, I was worried that too many Japanese texts and film borders would overshadow the main subject, but when the teacher gave me the first draft, I found that this vintage layout design resembling a music player, staves, and even a simulated video camera recording UI was truly too perfect for the overall atmosphere. Especially those retro camera parameter texts like JPEG, FHD, and REC placed within the film borders give the entire set of images an illusion of browsing through an old-fashioned photo album and music CD liner notes.
Although it wasn't released at the hottest peak of interest, I still feel that this kind of re-shooting and repackaging of a classic look is highly worth it. The charm of cosplay lies in the fact that no matter which year's version it is, as long as you prepare it with heart, it can always be given a brand-new visual meaning across different times and spaces. Throughout the whole process, from character research and wig trimming to wearing detailed accessories, I went all out. Overall, this set of photos exceeded my expectations regardless of texture, atmosphere, or final output. The photography teacher and the layout teacher were truly amazing, beautifully presenting the 2D world that was slightly aged with a time filter yet filled with vibrant colors that I had imagined through this beautiful piece of Cosplay photoshoot.
